I just installed some of the above rear shocks on my M3 1995 E 36. After two days, I hear a lots of clunking in the back As I go over bumps. An independent garage installed them for me. I gave them the shocks and oem mounts. They installed the shocks directly to the bottom of the mounts (They are directly touching the bottom of the mounts )and the mounts to the car as normal. I don't understand why I am hearing a clunking noise. The clunking sound sounds exactly like when your mounts go bad as I have had that problem in the past. Is there some type of buffer that should've been placed between the top of the BillStein sport shock and the bottom of the mount? Any help is appreciated

There's a very thin paper gasket that comes between the rear shock mount (RSM) and the body... but I don't think the absence of it would contribute in a large amount of noise.
The RSM should be mounted from underneath the shock tower, and the bolts should go on from the top if I remember correctly. The nuts themselves shouldn't have to be tightened TOO much... can't remember the torque value.

Thanks. Yea, the paper gasket is between the mount and the body and the mount appears to be in as it should. I'm just wondering if a washer or something goes between the mount and top of shock. When I look under the wheel well I can see the bottom of the mount as the top of the shock is narrower than the rubber portion I the mount

The gasket has no effect on noise or anything else. It helps prevent corrosion. If you have a clunl, with new shocks and RSM's, then one of 2 things has happened - something isn't tight, or something else has failed.

I'd check and make sure the mounts are tight... Now that I think about it, I had a clunking noise coming from my rear end on small bumps and potholes, it ended up being the jack in the spare tire well rattling around in the bracket. I just stuffed a rag in there between the jack and the wheel well. Problem solved. :buttrock

Check to make sure that were the mounts bolt to didnt crack. The e36 are known for cracking the metal there.
