For those of you who have a rattle noise coming from your VANOS, I would HIGHLY recommend you check out Beisan Systems (http://www.beisansystems.com/). They have excellent products, support, and VERY VERY clear procedures for repairing this problem. My VANOS noise was the result of 3 issues, 1) the tab from the exahust hub broke off, 2) the sprocket bolts on intake cam where very loose, and 3) the stems in spline shafts (that run in both the intake and exhaust hubs) had too much play. For the S54 engine, I went ahead with the 3 DIY procedures offered by Beisan: 1) S54 Vanos - (outlines everything you need to do to rebuild the Vanos seals along with an excellent solution for an improved oil pump disc), 2) S54 Rattle (clear instructions for removing play from the spline shaft stems and solution for the loose sproket bolts), and 3) S54 Vanos Solenoid upgrade and cleaning. At first this Vanos Rattle project looked intimadating due to my basic skill level. But in reality, Beisan Systems made it rather easy and straight forward. I had absolutely no issues. The Results: - will this is the best part - my engine (with 103,000 miles) sounds brand new and is performing better then I ever experienced. It is so quite and smooth - I am really really enjoying it. One other note - general mechanics and BMW wanted a small fortune to do this job - the Beisan solution was a fraction of the quoted prices. I like to thank Rajaie at Beisan Systems - thankfully, he has provided us with a great and econimical solution to this VANOS rattle problem.
