Hey all,

I have a brand new 2013 128i convertible and I am trying to use the USB port to play music from the iPhone 5 through the car's sound system.

I am using an official lightning cable from Apple, and not a knock off.

When I select USB, it recognizes that I have an iPod connected. However, it refuses to play any music as it says that I am using a cable that is not supported. I tried to use at least 3 different cables all genuine apple products and I am still getting the same error message.

I went to a BMW dealership and they are dumbfounded and told me to use an Aux cable.

Any suggestions?

Does the on board computer need a software update ?

Thanks!!

Have you tried using the BMW wireless app to try to get the phone to work with the car?

There is an update for the HU/RAD (radio) for the '13 models that fix this issue. Depending on your dealership, they might not charge you. If they do, iOS 7 (which will be out in september) for you iphone will also correct this issue. Because your car is brand new, its covered. If all else fails, they will replace the radio.

Thanks! My dealership claims that there is no update. Do you have any specifics on exactly what the update is called or the version number of the software ?

Also, there should be no charge for this update right since this is a brand new vehicle and shouldn't stuff like this be covered by the 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty?

I had the same issue. Older car ('09), but the BMW cable solved it. The cable was $50 and required million-pin to lightning adapter. Boo.
Dealer told me the software update is due in October and will be $$. With an '09, I expect these issues; hopefully they'll hook-up anyone with '13 or newer.
