View Full Version : How to re-encode A96 Convertible Soft Top Module - E85 Z4?

Long story short: It appears that the control module (A96) for the power top in my 2003 Z4 died an unceremonious death. I ordered and installed a new module, but it's not working. I took the car to the dealer after trying everything I could think of to get it working. They told me that it needs to be "re-encoded". It was close to quitting time and they didn't want to do while I was already there because they said it can take up to 4 hours. That was actually okay with me because I didn't want to pay them $165 to do it (on top of the $125 I already paid for the diagnosis).

I have INPA/NCS Expert/NCS Dummy/EDIABAS, but have not hooked it up to the car yet. I wanted to make sure I completely understood the process before attempting to encode the module. I've been reading forum posts all day on the subject and am more confused now than when I started! :confused

Can somebody offer a little hand holding and walk me through encoding the module, or point me to a good DIY/Tutorial?

FWIW: I have just ordered the BM Technic system. I understand that it includes the same software I already have, but I'll also get a WORKING interface. The one I have now is a real PITA to get to handshake with the car. Once it finally hooks up, it works fine though.
