I'm having my sport seats reupholstered this week in the softer Napa Leather and wanted to take the opportunity to install the heating and massage elements into the new seats.
How hard is the removal of these parts, from the seat, and will it ruin the seats that they are getting stripped from?
WIll probably sell or give away the current stock seats after the transplant.

Thought I saw a write up on E38.org
It looked like quite a bit of work.
Yep the writeup is linked on E38.org.
You should be able to do it without ruining the seats except that they won't have heating or active seat anymore.
To do it "right" I would add some plywood planks to a cutout in the bottom of the Sport seat foam.

You can't remove the heating elements without destroying the seat leather. The elements are stitched into the leather and cutting them out will cause the leather pieces to fall apart. You could always restitch the leather together, but I don't know how that would look.
Not to sound like a sales man, but I have a full set of facelift front seat heating elements already pulled from the seat leathers. Then you don't have to tear up your old seats.

That might be a good idea. Pm me pricing.
On another note, I will shortly have a set of the Sport comfort seats available for dirt cheap. They are in good condition as the car only has 85k on it. Looking to get $150 for the set. Massagers removed. Due to a misunderstanding with another member, these seats will only become available for sale once removed from the car. You can place a dib on the seats and will be put on a first dib, first served basis.
I am trying to get this done asap but am extremely busy and don't have much spare time for myself. But trust me that once the seats are out of the car, I want them gone asap and don't really care about price.
I'll keep you posted and pm if interested.
Thanks for reading!

These are just pics that I have in my computer. I'll take some real pictures Sunday and get them op. The seats are in great condition. A little worn on the driver's left bolster but no distortion in the foam at all on any part of the seats. Both backs are in great condition and the magazine flaps are tight as new.

The e38 (in the USA) came with three types of seats:
10-way Basic Seats (4-way lumbar was optional which could make it a 14-way seat)

16-way Comfort Seats (adds 4-way lumbar option + 2-way upper articulating back option to the 10-way Basic Seat along with different head rests

18-way Sport Comfort seats (adds 4-way lumbar option + 2-way upper articulating back option + 2 way thigh extension option to the 10-way basic seat...along with thicker and extended side bolsters

The seats pictured in the post above are the 16-way Comfort Seats (count the number of arrows on the seat & lumbar buttons). Due to the limited space for the thigh extension in the sport seats...the active-comfort (booty massaging) option wasn't offered on the 18-way Sport Comfort Seats. :)

Ok, can someone explain the seat massagers to me and if they are under the leather or foam.
They are under the foam.
Explanation: fluid is moved between left and right bags at about 60 seconds per cycle, keeping your spine from staying in the same alignment for long periods, reducing fatigue on long journeys.

How hard would they be to move to another seat. Wanted to know if it has to be done during upholstery or can I slip them in when I get the seats back
As has been said above, the writeup is on www.e38.org.
Here it is direct linked.... http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/567475
If the upholsterer leaves the leather/foam combo off the frame you can do it after upholstery.
