View Full Version : Pulley question?

Hello my future Mini brothers and sisters, once again I have another question. I want to get a new Mini, but I do not like the fact that it only has 163 bhp and 155 torque, I want more of both. I want to mod my mini when I get it, with a new smaller pulley, which will produce about 15 more pounds of boost I believe? Or I could be wrong... But anyway my question is this, how much horse power can I place on my engine till I have to make a major change to my engine, i.e. New manifold, new rockers, new intake... I want to know what are the limits of the engine so I can get at least 200 horse without making extensive changes. Plus if I did have to make major changes how much would it cost. I heard Mini Madness can get your Mini running at 245 with mods but they never say how much it cost. Can some one help me out? :help

Hi Bowflex,
there are many vendors that have go-fast parts for this fun car. We also make a nice line of components to imrpove the power output. Our most popular package is the Maxpak. This consists of a OEM quality pulley system, and specially tuned software that gives 42-44 more HP at the wheels safely. Please be very careful of ultra low price packages that do not include software! The retail price for this set up is 1900, however Bimmerforums members get very special pricing. Your price for this package would be $975.00 dollars.
We also have a great Short Shifter available and a kick butt Big Brake Kit. All our Eurobahn dealers can get you these items and handle the installation as well.

I wouldn't go that far. There has been A LOT of miles put on cars with 15%, 17%, and 19% reduction pulleys that DON'T have software. The ECU keeps the AFR pig rich throughout. I agree that software CAN help by fine tuning the AFR, but software isn't needed at all.
I have the 15% reduction pulley! Best mod I ever did to the car.
You should think about changing the rear sway bar when you get your car. That's my next mod - I drove one with it set on the stiffest setting - very nice neutral handling. You can induce four wheel drifts with it at will. I can do it in my S but it's a little trickier! LOL....
aloha!

I agree with you on the 15 and 17% pulleys. But we have run a few of the 19% and 21% pulleys on our dyno here and have seen some lean condition in the mid range partial throttle maps. Also in one case we got a very lean condition at WOT on the dyno with a 20% Pulley. Otherwise I agree that the larger pulleys are ok. We just like to match software with added boost for better power over the whole curve and long term reliability :)

Hmmmm.......
I haven't heard/read of anyone getting lean conditions with the 19%. That's interesting. I don't know too much about anything smaller than that.
I think the key is to keep IAT's down! With the compressor putting out soooo much heat the ECU is bound to dump fuel. I'm waiting for someone to come out with an intercooler that a)works b)sells for a decent price.
Thanks for the info!

You are 100% correct. We have been working on an air to water system for the car and hope to have it available for sale shortly. I do not have a price as of yet we are still seeing what all the parts that make up the kit are going to cost in quantity. I will keep you posted as it develops

One way to keep detonation in check is a richer mixture. Fuel cools, thats why lean engines run so hot. That is one reason I agree with Jeff on the computer tuning. Why don't you try water injection, it may be an easier solution.

I agree! I'm looking/researching for an ECU upgrade. I believe that with a 15% pulley there is SOME tweaking you can do. Conversely - Any smaller reduction than that starts going beyond the effeciency of the blower - i.e. IAT's increase. No matter how much tuning you do - you WILL need to upgrade the intercooler or like you said some form of WI. I'm not too keen on WI because you have to fill your water resevoir periodically. I would love to have an intercooler that performs much better than the stock one.
I feel the intercooler placement is pathetic. You get too much heatsoak from the engine itself! I'd love to get an FMIC - but then the price increases dramatically.
This car is much more fun to drive now. I love the pulley mod. In the future I'm probably going to go with a smaller reduction pulley plus upgraded intercooler. Or find an ECU upgrade that will get me the same output (with my 15%) that the 19% yields.

WE have the file for you then. Our 15% pulley program will make the car perform like it has a 19% pulley. We also are almost complete with an air to water aftercooler. :alright

BlowFlex,
To get back to your questions as a new MCS owner, yes, it is pretty easy to get 200-205hp (crank) from the MCS with several inexpensive mods.
1. 15% pulley - most bang-for-the-buck. Should run ~$400 installed.
2. CAI - $200 to $350. Install it yourself. Alta is the front runner.
3. Exhaust - $400 to $750. Install it yourself. Milltek is a favorite, I have the Alta.
Those are the basics and would get you to 200+hp. It starts to get expensive from here on with nominal gains.
4. Software - $600 to $700. As noted this isn't really a MUST w/15% pulley.
5. Larger Throttle Body - ~$600 I think.
6. 19% pulley which really needs a better intercooler to function properly.
7. Reworked head. Lot's of money for not very much more power.
I agree that the 22mm aftermarket rear swaybar is the best bang-for-the-buck handling upgrade.
