so i have a 95 318i, i have time and money now to clean it up a bit. My lower trim is fading and i have a few ideas on how to fix em. i either wanna dip them or i wanna dye them with forever black. Im looking for something that will last for awhile. im in So Cal so no weather issues.
if i dip do i need to take the front bumper off?
also can someone please photoshop my car with black trim, as well as black wheels??? PLEASEE! I would really appreciate it!
i wanna restore my wheels too so im between the alloy plasti dip that just came out or just the black dip with clear coat?
PLEASE HELP ME!

It'd of course be easier to paint if took parts off, but if you tape well enough you can of course paint while on. My body guy told me once that could use shoe polish on the trim. I've never actually tried, but someone should.
Never been huge fan of black rims, they generally make car look cheap. But if you lived where I do, you'd see we all use black rims when snow tire season comes along haha

Well how long would it last? I don't mind masking but I prefer the dip bexause its a bit more permanet in a sense. I know but my rims are all curbed up because I learned to drive in this car and I had no sense of how far the curb was -.-

As far as longevity goes, plastidip is surprising. I dipped all the chrome trim and wheels and grill on my 06 Magnum 3 years ago and have just had minor touch-ups since. Two keys to making plastidip work and last:
1: You can tape the parts off on the car, but if you do, you'll need an xacto knife to cut the tape loose again, if you just pull it, it will pull the dip off all jaggedy with it.
2: Lots of thin coats and let them dry COMPLETELY before the next coat. This makes all the difference in the world in both how well it sticks to the car and the smoothness of the coat.
I just bought a beaten up old 94 325i and I'm going to dip all of the faded black trim on it as soon as I get a chance, but I haven't decided on a color yet.

ohh alright but how did you prep the parts as in cleaning wise?
i have alot of brake dust on my wheels and i wanna clean the trim up so it will come out perfect

I've used a flat black primer without clearcoat for my bottoms since 2005 and it seems to last about 2-3 years before fading so I'm looking to do something else this time. Black dip with clearcoat should last a very, very long time but you'd probably get a similar result for cheaper with regular black paint.
If you've never touched your bottoms and want it color matched there is a way to strip off the grey and your original paint is waiting for you below.

I'd color match it first, but if that isn't an option dye>>>>>>plastidip for something like that. I use "showroom new" dye.

Yeah I'm having a bit of a hard time doing it because my car is calypso so idk what it looks like with black.

Im really considering the dye , but my bumper is scratched up from hitting it. I should probably buy a new bumper or color match but I'm kinda hoping to get a new car, a e46 maybe. So I'm looking for something to just keep me happy.

Id say dye or even flat black spray paint, as Plasti dip is challenging to tape off and finish with a nice line.

I've got a 95 325 convertible and I just applied two $13 dollar six inch strips of black vinyl wrap that is sold in most auto parts stores. You can get the carbon fiber embossed or plain. I've had it on for 13 months and drove all winter in Michigan. I'll redo it in another 12 months.

If you're using plastidip, just make sure the surface is clean. No sanding or prep.

But paint is not my favorite because if I mess up I'm screwed. If I go dye which is the best ?
I had a bit of rust on my rockers. I cut it out replaced it with metal and some bondo. I primed everything and painted the rockers a satin black. Yesterday I painted the lower parts of the bumpers with black Dupli-Color Bumper Coating. My bumpers had some scratches from the PO hitting stuff, I sanded the bumpers lightly and wiped them down. While not perfect it looks surprisingly good. 99% of people would not even notice that that I used rattle cans and the color is not OEM. All in all I spent about $15 on rattle cans and the my 95 vert looks years younger.

what color is your car? TBH i really am avoiding a paint can due to the fact if i mess up im screwed. Plasti dip is another thing, ive also thought of painting over the dip with a type of color match maybe
CAN ANYONE PLEASE PHOTOSHOP ME THE TRIM BLACK? ALSO BLACK WHEELS, OR WHITE WHEELS?

I would not dye the rockers. Paint them. Four coats and a clear is satisfactory. Five or six coats tops, but that would be overkill.

Yeah that bottle goes a LONG way. Tape off the surrounding areas, rub the plastic down with IPA to clean it, and apply the dye with a red shop rag. You're going to want to wear gloves too.

Alright thank you! I'm unsure whether to go with grey or black dye? What's your opinion? Oh and how long does the application last?

The dye will probably just restore the factory grey. If no else does it then I will photoshop you some black bottoms when I get home later from work tonight to help you decide. Personally, I think the black would look good and last a long time if you clearcoat it

I forget the year of the cars but somtimes you can get lucky and there is the factory color under the rock guard just have to remove some of it to see

Well the dye suggested was actuallly coming in grey and black. I know it might not look black but I feel it could be like a deep grey close to black. I'm afraid the car could look cheap due to my color. If it was white I would be all in but I feel like with my color I have to be more cautious. Thank you so much the Photoshop would help so much! If it isn't too much can you possibly do the car with white rims and black? Thank you if not no worries!

I have heard the same but I've seen people completely ruin the trim so I'm a bit afraid

Yes, but are you trying to match the original oem skirt color or body color?

the oem skirt color is grey thats why ive thought about dying it. but black is an idea due to the fact i would not have to do it again for awhile, also cover up some imperfections. to do body color is difficult due to it being metallic paint

I'm digging the grey wheels but I like the white wheels a lot better than expected. I vote white wheels with a drop but would hate to have to clean them every day.

omg thank you! i know well i have brake pads that give off no dust. but if i stay consistent on cleaning it wont be too bad. i probably wont smoke corners but im thinking black trim will happen. ill do wheels after! ill keep updates!
PS. im thinking of black out the grill if i do the dip on the trim

My friend did matte black skirts on his hellrot coupe and it looked beautiful. I wish I had pictures.
I like blacked out grills on 92-95s. IMO it looks a little funny on the more pronounced, updated 96-99 units.
