Means it was damaged enough to warrant a writeoff then it was repaired and deemed roadworthy again...

Tell Tell sign for an 88 is the newer front valance and metal bumper combo with the ellipsoid head lights. This is definetley an 88 IS. As for the title, the State of California says the car is issued a Salvage Title due to damage and written off by insurance company, BUT if the car is rebuilt to be considered "Road Worthy" it is issued a "Revived Salvage" title. Either way the car was damaged at one point so anyway you look at it it is a Salvage Title and you can never insure it with fully only the state mandated Liability insurance. Keep looking, patience pays off and you will find a nicer clean titled car for about the same to less that that asking price.
For instance, I bought my 89 325I for $800.00 but I put in another $400.00 into it in parts (Head, TB, Tensioner and Water Pump) and about 24 hours for work to get it running to where its at now. Anyway, I'm off the point, be patient and you will find yours at the right price.
