While driving my e38 on a local highway at approximately 65-70 MPH on Saturday, I experienced a sudden blowout on my left rear tire. The tread stayed in tact, however the sidewalls are completely gone. My rear m-parallel is trashed as is my fender liner, the underside of my bumper, and my ABS wiring.

In summary, I am less than pleased as these tires aren't cheap and had tread life left.

I just purchased replacement from tires about 3 months ago and an thinking about going back to America's Tire and requesting that they remove them and replace them with a different brand.

Does anybody have a good experience with another tire, perhaps a Pirelli or Bridgestone?

If I were to go with run flats do you think it would prevent a complete failure of this nature in the future?

Thanks for the input. I am not a BMW tire guru and have always just replaced with OEM.

How old were the tires? Did they have any cracking on the side? How long did you drive on it after you heard it blow? Tires show wear and fatigue noticeably, 99% of the time. They're good tires. Also higher end tires tend to sit longer in warehouses before being sold so I'd recommend checking to see if there is a date of manufacturing.

Tires were installed in late 2010. No noticeable damage. Never been curbed. I'll have to check the manufacture date on the other tire (assuming they are from the same batch) as there is no manufacture date left due to that tire being shredded.

It blew and I immediately heard and felt metal contacting the ground. I immediately pulled over to the shoulder.

Did the.car go in for any body work to that area as some times the use heat lamps, etc to speed up drying times? The tire could have.developed a bubble from hitting a pothole..So many variables ......Perhaps even an ex.-girlfriend tried slashing it, but was only strong enoug to weaken it or some hunter shot out your wheel for sport....it happens

Nope. No body work or tire repairs of any sort. Tire pressure checked regularly.
