So I just bought my first bimmer on Monday, a sliver 535i 2008 premium and sports package. She only has 49873 miles. I bought her for $24600 out the door. So now I'm looking into a warranty from my credit union/fiance company. gold package covers engine (including the turbos), transmission, rear wheel drive steering, brakes, front suspension, air conditioning for $2962 4 years or 50,000 miles. Gold package is all that plus the electrical for $3900 and the platinum package is everything for $5000. After owning this car which if any of these would you buy? the only thing not included is your regular scheduled maintenance.

Bought virtually identical car a little over a year ago. Here is what I did. Pay for a good presale inspection, for the 250$ it cost it saved me about 1200$ by finding a few items (mainly the metronic seal) and getting the seller to repair at bmw. After that I took the 5k I was going to spend on warranty and put it to the side. So far I have only to replace oil filter seal, which most warranties will not cover oil leaks anyways. Unless you never work on your own cars save your money. Focus on maintenance items like oil changes every 7k and premium gas due to turbos and hpfs.

It is really your call, and depends on how risk-adverse you are. Personally I do not buy additional warranties, ever; not for anything. Have done so for over 25 years and should have invested those thousands of dollars of saved premiums.
I have the same model and year BMW you own, which I bought three years ago with 21K miles. So far I paid $800 out of pocket to replace the water pump. I did that preventively since I detected some noise when doing the purge routine after replacing the coolant. A warranty would not have covered that, and I did not want to wait until the pump would actually fail.
My maintenance schedule is old school and I follow Mike Miller's schedule. I also only use BMW parts and fluids and use Shell V-power 93 Octane gas.

Just some info that I'm sure the dealer didn't tell you about. The turbos/wastegates are covered by BMWNA for 8yrs/82k miles. The HPFP is also covered by BMWNA for 10yr/120k miles. Take a look at the Route 66 warranty since I have heard many positive things about their coverage.
