I am looking to get the tint replaced on all of my windows. Question about the back windshield though.... do the heating elements run between the tint and the window or are they embedded inside of the window. I ask only because i am afraid whoever does the retinting will fuck it up.

Well if they are quality shop then they should have no trouble sweating off the tint. Just make sure the new guys not working on it. If they tear the radio/defrost it can be repaired w/ no issues and the tint shop can do it. More that likely they will use a steamer to remove it. Just make sure you replace it it with a UV blocking tint and if the shop will not warrent against bubbling and fading for the lifetime of the time then look else where for a shop.
I paid $220 for 5% in the rear and 15% on driver sides and the shop I went to removed my rear with no trouble and have a lifetime on it

The only probs w/ tinting my back window was around the edges where on the window theres those raised black dots or whatever they are. It was tough to get the tint down on them, but the tint shop made it work.

I've never seen a car that has the element in the glass. But with Bimmers, you never know... :D
They are normally in the inner part of the window (interior) & the tint will go over it.
Another solution that removes the tint glue is ammonia.

I was quoted $300 for removal and installation of new tint on my e39. The pricing will depend on the particular installer and quality of film they are using.
BTW - the defroster lines are in the inside of the interior, on the glass. The steamer method is widely used, I've also seen shops spray ammonia on the glass and tape a plastic bag to the rear windshield, allowing the tint to bake in the hot sun all day - after a few hours, the tint will simply wipe right off.
Of course, these guys are the professionals - I would ask around before tackling anything of this sort yourself.
anything over $275 for removal and retint is TOO much....a quality shop in NJ charged me $250 for removal and retinting of the whole car (they charge more than most places)...
