Tell me, how much better does your car run and feel since ditching the hood killer.

I'm guessing he's referring to using the volvo fan/shroud setup? Or possibly the Taurus fan?

There are a few members here that have the zionsville kit, maybe one will chime in. Lot of benjamins though.

Does the viscous fan really sap that much power??

Not really. The viscous fan is a really effecient piece of work. People just don't want an old clutch to lock up and make the fan explode under the hood.

I went with the Zionsville kit and deleted my fan+clutch in the process.
I can't say that the car runs or feels "better" with an electric fan, but I do know that I have the peace of mind that I would not have to deal with the hood/pipes killer.

I replaced the factory Jaguar/Lincoln hydraulic fan set up in a Lincoln LS with the biggest electric puller fan I could find that would fit. Connected it to power and a thermostatic switch, and it worked like a charm. During the summer when both electric fans were running (factory pusher in front plus my modded puller behind the radiator), it sounded like a small jet engine was under the hood!

A buddy of mine used a Volvo fan/shroud/relay setup on his wife's E39, as far as I know he's still running that setup a year+ later without issues.

I've installed at least a dozen Zionsville kits. They're easy to install and wire, look and feel top notch, and to be honest they're extremely well designed and built. I get a little chubbed up when I install one. I recommend that kit whole heatedly, and I will be installing one this summer on my E38 as well. Peace of mind, and the last radiator you'll purchase for that car. I always try to upgrade if I'm going to replace a part on a vehicle.

How do you wire up the electric fan?

How do you wire up the electric fan?
The best wiring i seen was from txdarth, he wired it into the starter i believe or something like that, i do hope he decides to make a write up on it eventually.

Car feels a little smoother with the fan off especially when it would be engaged. Definitely quieter also. I always use the imperial fan and thermostat from advance auto parts as I don't have the money for the zionsville at the rate I switch cars. Its only $99 for the whole setup.

As some of you know, Ive done the conversion with no real issues. The fan clutch seized up in my old M3 and that forced the conversion. So for piece of mind I did the same thing to my e38. You can't feel any change in power. The Zionsville set up sounds perfect but if youre on a budget (like me) then an alternative is needed. Hence the reason I went with a basic 16in puller fan, relay setup, in-line fuse, and tapped into a power source. It has been close to a yr since I did it too.
