View Full Version : Oh My God...a Trans Am???? I'm Still In Shock

My girlfriend and I decide to go out for ice cream and have some quality time together. I was just crusing along and this trans am 2 lanes over swaps lanes fast and decides to pace me. My girlfreind IMMEDIATELY says don't even think about it. I just look over and he sort guns it like he's ready to go. My girlfriend is steadily in my ear.
By this time the guy is about a car out cruising and I tell my girlfriend to hold on. I drop it in 2nd around 50 and take off. I get beside him and sort of let off just a hair and then continue to floor it. At this time I am going 60 and he nailed it. He was already going at least 60 when I got beside him. This is where it got interesting.
I hear the V8 come to life with the same normal roar and to my surprise this guy can not catch me all the way up to about 95mph where we approached a light and had to stop. the gap was about 1/2 a car. I wanted to talk to this guy and he turns down another road and doesn't even give a honk.
I was thinking to myself, this guy started it and want even talk. The car sounded like an auto no real hard shifts but was loud. The black bimmer with black wheels and the AC SCHNITZER EMBLEM on the side must have really gotten his attention. I just caught this guy at the right time...advantage BMW. I stil can't believe he couldn't catch me. I was looking in my rearview mirror the whole time waiting for the big pull...never happened. Even my girlfriend was shocked and she knows nothing about cars. She was saying, "he has a trans am...he just can't drive... that sucks". I think he had 3 people in the car also. I saw 2 for sure.

That Trans Am was in fact a V6 firechicken, there's no way a LS1 trans am wouldnt' catch you. I raced many in my turbo civic that beat up on E36 M3's and they still walked away even stock. If it was a crusted out LT1 automatic i could maybe see that happening.

Any idea on the Year of the car? Did it say TransAm anywhere on it?

Well let me put it in perspective. I have raced GTs form a punch on the freeway and neither of us pulled on each other. We didn't launch at the same time and I was in the powerband when he took off. Given other high speed runs I have had with NUMEROUS stock gts to him it was like trying to walk down a mustang gt. It probably would have happened had we gone further, but at that time and place it didn't. We only ran it up to 95 from 55. That is not that long to hold off a car.
When I had my GSR I ran a firehawk on the freeway up to 100 and stayed side by side with him from 60 then he started to walk. Granted he had 4 people in his car, but hey he did it anyway. Do I think I can beat a firehawk...no, but that day I caught him with the wrong load.
The trans am was an older one with the goofy looking bodykit. And yes, it was a V8. You can't mistake a f-body V8 roar. However, it was older. 90's at least.

you had a bad turbo then, or needed to get it tuned right. I had a 99 civic si with major bolt on's and a 60shot of laughing gas and I could hold off stock LS1 trans am on the street. At the track it was a different story...traction. And the trans am I raced was an older one and like I said I think it was an auto because I didn't hear any hard shifts. He also had extra people in the car possibly 2, 3 including the driver. Why would I race a V6 firebird??? I beat those in my civic with just the bolt ons.

Ah, I see. Had it been an LS1 at those speeds that = 3rd gear, which is the f-body's killer gear. You say older, any idea what year?
An LT1 auto T/A ain't exactly lightning... And an L98 auto T/A... some might even be able to call that slow...
If it had a body kit on it, it very well could have been a V6 with an exhaust, you'd be surprised how loud that can be...

Yeah i know what you mean about the LS1 in third gear. I have no idea what year it was the guy wouldn't chat at the light. It was an auto definitely. The thing about the V6 with mufflers...nah. There are a lot of morons around here running V6's with flowmasters. I know that sound...it sounds like crap...like a V8 with a cold...very distinctive. This one was definitely not a V6. I would have completly innihilated that. It was at my bumper at 95 then we both had to shut it down quick. And you're right the LT1 auto ain't that fast anyway, especially with 3 people in the car.

The automtaic LT1 trans ams have this performance button that make the shifts harder. When the button isn't pushed it will shift a couple grand below redline. I'm pretty sure thats what happened to you.

Sounds good. Look,
1. this guy had at least 3 people in the car
2.he egged on the race
3. it was only from 50 to about 95
4. I don't think he would pull on a GT that fast ( I am pretty close to a GT at freeway speeds)
5.and what guy in a trans am would let a BMW beat him and then drive away?
6. If you think he should have walked away from me, then you're saying he would walk away from a GT also with no problem? In an auto 90s model? I don't think so
7. I am sure if he had this so called button he pushed it at some point, noone would settle for a loss
8. Last but not least I got the jump on him
Do I think I can beat a LT1...NO!! In this race though he put himself at a disadvantage too many people, slow reaction, quick jaunt. I didn't give him time to pick up steam. It was over at 95. Go out and run your car 55 to 95 and see how quick of a run that is...pretty quick.

I say nice kill! Although it seems as if others would disagree, I think it's possible especially with the conditions. Nice run.

Thank you...finally someone that reads the whole post then judges. I am just saying that if at freeway speeds I can keep up with 00 and up GTs then why wouldn't I be able to hold off a trans am at least for a bit??? I didn't say it was from a stop. It was fun though I couldn't quit talking about it at the bar though. I was giggly all night. :D

Hahaha, feels good to win doesn't it? Do you have anything special/mods besides the black wheels and ac schnitzer emblem? Sorry if you already answered the question.

Just suspension...hence the emblem and ENDLESS brake pads. It looks mean as hell though. :evil2 I am still on a high. I thought for sure he was going to leave me. I lost all my swagger when I lost to a GT with gears and exhaust...he got me pretty good. I fell a LOT better now.

Well no shit you had a b series motor and nitrous of course you're gonna put up a better fight with a stock LS1. I only lost by about 3 cars or so and a 55 shot would defienetely even it up. Besides...who uses a 60 shot anyways? I have plenty of friends running SC61's on the stock bottom end with hondata pushing 300 whp raping stock ls1's. My car was a d16 on just 8 psi, and i bet the powerband kicked the shit out of your B16's.

why are you talking so much crap?? I was not putting down your car. This isn't a pissing contest! I bet you had a GREAT powerband. I ran a 60 shot because I wanted to. I pushed it to an 80 shot before I traded it in for the GSR. Don't get all hot about it. I had a friend that had a completly built motor from Japan in a crx with about 25,000$ worth of crap in it. He was fast as hell at 5 psi. I have seen d16 on boost beat ls1's is all I am saying. They did blow the motors though. Chill out man... nothing but love here baby. :)

3rdone: I REALLY wonder about you, your stock 328, and these stories you come up with this car.
I, and a lot of my friends, have been driving obviously-modified cars for years now. Nothing rice, I should add, but obvious enough to someone who knows what to look for, like a lowered stance, non-stock exhaust-tip (no cans here), and some of my friends even had a body-kit.
An experience like you shared (car pacing, egging for a race) RARELY happened to me, or my friends. This is especially important to me, as I used to have a job where I drove almost 100 miles round-trip daily, with about 85% of the driving on the freeway/highway.
I just don't see ANY T/A driver doing that with a STOCK 328. An M3, maybe, but even then, M3 drivers experiencing this out of the blue is not that common, even here, in the kills forum. Hell, I wouldn't have done it with my old, modified Integra, which would have been a good match for a stock one (328). Why am I going to sit there and bother some guy just putting along in his stock ride? I mean, unless you are calling attention to yourself somehow, with things like stickers, backwards hat/driving "g-style", or something...or you started it.
Either way, if the race did happen, that was a V6 you raced. There is a recent thread here, in the kills forum, where there is a video taken of a stock automatic, LT1 Z28, against a well-modded M3, and the Z was only two cars back. I doubt if you can hang within two cars of a stock M3 from a roll, much less a modded one. The Z28 in the vid is acknowledged to be the slowest possible form of the newer, V8 F-bodies. Hell, the Z-driver didn't get the most out of the car, because he could've manually d-shifted it to 2nd from 40, and stayed even with the M3. If you raced any other form (M6, and/or LS1), you would have been murdered, passengers or not.
I still don't see how any "racer" would egg-on you and your "stock" car like that...and you get one of these almost every other week. Especially in Texas, where there are TONS of modified cars to pick on.
How are you calling attention to yourself?

Good kill 3rddone. On the street anything can happen. I lost in my ls1 to an lt1 awhile back, preety badly. Ofcourse the lt1 had something done, but its wierd how everyone makes the lt1s into be such slouches, there not.
If you could hang with newer GTs you could definetly hang/beat older trans ams.

This is exactly why I used to stay away from these forums. I have been driving moddified cars for about 8 yrs. My car does not look stock anyway. Have you ever seen a black on black BMW? It doesn't look stock... even though it is. Anyway why would ANYONE get on here and lie about a race? If you read any of my other post, a lot of them are losses. I don't get races in my car all the time... they come in spurts. I will go 2 weeks without a race and then for 3 days straight one after the other. Most people in this forum drive some form of BMW. From my experiences Bmw owners are pretty straight about their races. You are trying to tell me that if he had 3 to 4 people in his car it wouldn't make a difference...please.
My mom has a red auto Z28 and a '03 vette. the auto z is decent but it's no barn burner. Her z is a 95. I am almost positive the TA was of the same year. I just don't see why anyone would come here and lie??? I didn't say I ate his lunch, I said that from 55 to 95 he was at my back bumper. I admitted that he was a car ahead and I floored it from behind him and he pursued. Big deal??!! I never said I could beat a TA with equal variables...but in this case the odds were CLEARLY in my favor for that short of a run. By the way a lot of people like to pick on bimmers around here... we are considered an easy yuppie kill. You win some you lose some...lying about it is not an option for me.
