No, 3 series have different offset.

What kind of offset are we talking then? I'm in the same position. I'm interested in wheels that will fit an E39 and I need it for my E36. Wondering if spacers will help.

you'll need a 20mm spacer at least

The offser for the E39 M5 wheels are 20 F and 22 R. The standard 3 series neesd to be at least 35 or greater offset to not rub the fenders.

actually, even with a spacer, you would not be able to run e46 rims on an e39. this is due to the e39 having a larger hub than the e46.

unfortunately no. also for the same reason, e39 has a larger hub than the e38.
