Hey all, hoping for a bit of insight, my 2009 328xi started idling rough, and a high pitched noise started screeching under the hood. I popped the hood while it was happening and it wasn't from the front of the engine where the belt is, it was more to the left and back. Quick google-fu and I actually found a video of a guy with a 07 that had the same issue, but no dice on a cause.

The weird thing is that I turned off the car and turned it back on and the sound is gone and the idle is fine.

Thoughts??

I have this problem with an old Ford I own. It happens most often when the outside temp dips into the low 60's - high 50's. Odd... cleaned the MAF, etc. still there...

Hopefully I'm not too late to join the conversation, but I had the same problem. I have a '09 328i S, It happen when I was driving through the Mojave, the noise got worse and while driving the timing belt came off. I had to call roadside assistance and the following Monday BMW told me that the air compressor gave out. It's one of the moving parts that help the timing belt do it's job. Luckily, I still have the warranty coverage and it was replaced. So, hopefully that solves what is going on.

the timing belt came off
What came off was the serpentine belt. These cars have an internal timing chain.
