I have been to a couple local audio shops to try and replace the factory business head unit /w hifi. I dont have the premium hifi or idrive. I have been told that the factory unit is tied to more than just the speakers and amp with some kind of canbus system(whatever it was they call it) with fiber optic wires/cables. Has anybody successfully swapped out just the factory head unit.

The most-bus fiber is the problem, but only if you have a Logic 7 system. If you don't have Logic 7 (no center channel speaker in dash, no rear door speakers) then you can do a regular swap to an aftermarket head unit...but not to BMW hifi or professional stereo. This requires a LOT more effort than simply swapping to a head unit, including coding, and installing the most-bus cable and Logic 7 amp for it all to work.

Another question for the experts - when the can-bus twisted pair is unplugged from the factory HU (permanently) will you get error codes?

There was a thread a while back, can't remember if it was here or not. But someone who had swapped their head unit out needed to get their car coded for one reason or another, and was unable to do so without re-installing the OEM radio due to the car not being able to talk to the OEM radio. Just an FYI

That's true. If there is any coding or programming needed, it cannot be done without the factory head unit in place. Well, not with the BMW ISSS software anyway.
