the other day i got a coolant level message just as i started to pull out the driveway. checked it out and the level appeared to be low as the floater was low in the expansion tank. i proceeded to top the tank off but as i poured in coolant the floater did not move...so i kept pouring and bleeding but the floater never moved and my coolant mixture covered the floater.

this has never happened before and i have been noticing a few drops if coolant under the expansion tank area on the ground when i park it after a drive. does this sound like an expansion tank that is ready to be replaced? this is the only piece of cooling system hardware that i have not replaced yet. mind you i am not overheating, but i definitely do not like leaks, especially cooling system leaks.

thank you in advance for any insight.

Sounds like your floater is stuck.

Pull the floater stick up with your hand to see if you can move it.

Did the light go out after the fill?

Floater was stuck.

Is the leaking due to too much fluid in the the tank or do i need to replace it?

I did add fluid as mentioned before, even though it probably didn't need it...

Too much fluid in the tank can ruin it but you might be safe as it may have just pushed it's way out of the cap.

With the car totally cold. REmove the cap and make sure that the floater is flush with the top of the expansion tank. Look at the diagram on the tank.
