The engine has been ticking since I bought the 740 a month ago. I'd gone through all the usual subjects, belt, timing chain tensioner, ect. But still ticking. I was convinced it was lifter noise I would just have to live with.

Until today I stumbled across a thread where a guy found his spark plugs loose(bosch) and fixed his ticking so I figured what the hell. Tore all the stupid plastic bits off of my engine and copped a feel and guess what? 3 whole completely loose spark plugs I removed with nothing but my fingers and all the rest but one werent tightened to my liking either. All of them were bosch platinum 4's.

i replaced them with tried and trusted single pole NGK iridium's. started her up aaaand..... Blissful silence! Nothing but slightly noisy vanos now! SWEET!

i am a happy camper.

Love it. I bet after a few drives she'll be running happier too.

The wonders of marketing. Have people spending over $10 on a spark plug just to run worse.

Was probably my thread hahaha, it did my head in how one single loose plug was causing so much racket. Glad to hear you got it sorted, I think there might be a LOT of misdiagnoses out there due to loose and noisy plugs!

Its funny that you made this post. The same thing has been happening to mine for a few months and I remembered someone on here saying that the spark plugs could be the culprit. The second spark plug from the front on the passenger side was so loose that it was barely threaded in. I tightened it down and poof, no more tick. I thought it was a lifter as well. I'm just glad I didn't start buying parts for no reason. Gotta love bf.com :buttrock

No need to goo them up with anti seize when you guys do them the next time. As you can see the problem is not so much getting stuck. the problem is that they come out! Plus anti seize will jack up your o2's

The scary part was one of the prongs on one of the bosch plugs was gone! I made a thread about it in general but for some reason it hasn't been posted yet.

I hope it's not bouncing around in there. That plug metal is hard stuff.

Maybe by some miracle it found its way out through the exhaust without doing any damage to the motor (would probably drive a nice hole through one of the cats though). Scary thought...

they probably would have charged him 3 grand to replace all the things he already replaced, then returned it to him still with the tick.
