Just signed up to this website and im hoping it helps me out! I have a 1999 540i with 120xxx miles. It ran out of gas and I put in 2 gallons and it won't start now, it cranks but wont start. I checked fuel line that's connected to the fuel filter and it is shooting gas out when I crank it. So I assume it's not the fuel filter or fuel pump? Not sure what else it could be. If anyone knows what to check next or what might be the problem that would be great. It's been sitting for about 2 weeks now.

Also i noticed this line is broken and I don't what it is, if I should fix it immediately or what: http://m1311.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/dino9161/1365205748_zps19a76166.jpg.html?o=1

here's a shot of the engine if anybody can notice anything wrong:

That's a tiny photo, but it looks like the vacuum hose (#6 in Diagram 1 - Part #11611436644) to the intake boot (#4 in diagram 2 - Part #13711436139).

You should replace that regardless of whether that's the issue or not. It may very well be the cause of your no start problem. I was going to say you fried your Fuel Pump, but you mention fuel spraying out of the line when you try to turn her over.

Even if you are getting fuel out of the line it may not have adequate pressure because you may have killed the pump when you ran out of fuel.

Your fuel filter has multiple lines on it, so did you check the one going to the fuel rail or the one coming from the pump?
Look at the left front corner of the fuel rail, see that schrader valve? That's where you should be looking for 50PSI of fuel spraying out. I'd dump another 2 gallons in the tank, turn the key to position 2 a few times to fill the fuel rail and then see if it will start.
That broken line is allowing unmetered air in past the MAF which will cause a lean condition, cold engines want a rich fuel mixture when you start them.

Just because you're seeing gas squirt out doesn't mean the pump can give 40psi or whatever the rail needs under load. Sometimes pumps can have okay 'free-flow' but fold like old lettuce when you put resistance on the line.
