View Full Version : NCS: Initial VO(FA) Read Issue

In NCS Expert, after selecting my chassis E89(E90) my VIN is acknowledged, but upon clicking ‘ZCS/FA f.ECU’ and either CAS or FRM as the source, I get the following error:

“ Following feature is invalid for FA: $8AF ”

On the main screen the space to the right of ‘FA’ where the VO numbers should show is blank. Without the recognition of the VO, NCS is not allowing to proceed with reading ECUs so I can’t proceed with coding.

The odd thing is that clicking 'Enter FA' shows the VO editing pop-up window and I can see my VO in the vertical list. I can add values but I can't delete "$8AF" for example by selecting it and pressing the 'delete' key on the computer's keyboard. I was hoping that if I could delete the "$8AF"(Korean Owner's Handbook, info which is not crucial) from the VO, it would be possible for NCS to perform the initial read.

I've noticed the many comments online about having to update daten files, but not many detailed explanations of why this happens.
My car's software was updated in 2012 via ISTA/P V2.46. Daten V46 (afaik).

I am currently running:
D-CAN Cable *One Stop Electronics - good
EDIABAS 7.2.0
NCS Expert 3.1.0
* In the DATEN folder's E89 folder there are 428 items, in the E90 folder there are no files. The 428 files are roughly 45% 2010, 45% 2006, 10% other year modified files.

I hope I can get detailed advice towards a solution. If I need daten files, what do I need to look up specifically (for example which ISTA/P install disk version and what files/folders etc.). Also, would such daten require the use of the ICOM interface etc.?

Would updating to BMW Standard Tools 2.11, 2.12 help even without installing a bunch of newer daten files?

The first thing i would try, is updating your *.000, *.K00 and *.M00 files. They maybe out-of-date. Replace them with this: https://www.rapidshare.com/files/3188784980/K-M-AT.zip If that doesn't work, we can modify the string within the CAS and the FRM manually.

Updating those files apparently was not enough, for I got the same error, but I still very much appreciate your efforts that were in the right direction.

I updated to BMW Standard Tools 2.12, and 'updated daten files' with SP-Daten V49 using BMW Coding Tool v2.5.0 as an installer. Out of the total of about 37GB, the total for just the E89 files was just over 10GB(!), and surprisingly about 10GB went into the NFS' DATA folder! This enabled NCS to initially read VO, then move onto reading CAS. I even got the German interface working in English.

The only issue I have now is that NCS(v4.0.1) is not allowing loading of any profiles other than the Default profile. Therefore, I can't load manipulation enabled profiles, and I'm not familiar with how to make one. The error I get is:

“Profile Version 2.0 ungültig!”

How can I make/use manipulation enabled profiles in NCS v4.0.1?

Thanks rondo!:stickoutt
A short while ago I realized that the 'Fisterprofile' I had opens(!), so I edited it to match the settings of the REVTOR.PFL (the 'Fisterprofile' under [SGET] had "SgetLesen=0" which I edited to "SgetLesen=1"). I named this profile TINKERMAN just for laugh.

The REVTOR.PFL was giving the version error because its format version is "2.0", but I noticed if it is changed to "3.0", then it results in a checksum error(?). I also noticed that your Expertmodus(offen).pfl you provided is also the same settings as the REVTOR.PFL (other than the format version being 3.0).

I’ll give it a go and be back!

rondo, I have to thank you again!
I had to use the Expertmodus (offen) profile you provided.
My edited profile (Fisterprofile edited to settings of Revtor profile) loaded and allowed to read VO fine and all, but caused an error when I tried to read the MAN file.
Your Expermodus (offen) profile allowed the read of the MAN file, which allowed me to finally update the batterie classe in CAS from 70Ah to 90Ah, then I was able to proceed with Tool32 to register the battery, finally after almost 2 months of struggling! :redspot
*Also thanks again DavidMC, FAL, IcemanBHE, shawnsheridan and many other folks:smiliecap. With the relatively urgent matters taken care of, I can now proceed learning at a more reasonable pace.

The only trouble I have now is that I cannot edit the VO in the ‘Enter FA’ window. I can ADD but I cannot delete a code by selecting then pressing the delete key on my laptop’s keyboard.

Could this be due to profile selection or is this a different issue? Again, I’m using NCS Expert 4.0.1 and ‘V49 daten’.

rondo, regarding this 'select key', is it a key in the software? I don't see it anywhere. Could you provide this 'guide' you are referring to?

Thanks to fdriller9 and icuc (from another forum), for pointing towards the 'delete' key itself as the possible issue.

I first tried ‘command+delete’ - it did not work. I then whipped out the beastly USB keyboard with all kinds of stuff on it – the ‘Delete’ key worked!!! :guitarist

I have a feeling that the delete key on my MacBook Air was functioning as a ‘back space’ key rather than a ‘delete’ in NCS Expert (I didn’t notice this in other programs at all though).

Here’s the blasphemous setup I had going for one goddamn ‘Delete’ key – SICK!
