Several months ago I replaced the tie rod ends on my wife's e39 and stripped one of the jam nuts slightly. I figured I'd keep my eye on it and of course I forgot!!! So yesterday my wife says that her car's steering is off center and the ABS light is on.
Turns out that the jam nut had failed and the adjusting rod that connects the tie rod end to the steering rack had backed out 1/4" to 3/8" and had caused a significant toed-out condition.
So I checked it out with Carsoft 6.5 (which is the only diagnostic software I have) and it threw a "41 Steering Angle Sensor" code.
This makes sense as I guess that the steering angle sensor is sensitive enough to pick up the toed-out condition and generate a fault code.
This afternoon I'll replace that jam nut, set the toe to zero and then run the steering thru its full range of motion several times.
My question is:
Will the error code reset itself after a period of time as it determines that the alignment is now back into spec? I don't think that Carsoft can reset that 41 code fault, and since the actual steering angle sensor has never been removed or replaced, it shouldn't have to be re-coded or re-calibrated should it?
