Will they fit on my stock 16" rims? Obvious benifits will be more traction, any bad points? Wheel well gap to big makeing car look weird?

Don't know if they will miss the strut..
I would suggest the 215-40-16. Take a look at this site regarding tire fitment.

215/40 16s would be a lot smaller in diameter than the 205/50 16. That website is all about which sizes are best for auto-x, where a smaller diameter is beneficial because of lesser moment of inertia as well as a better rolling gear. I would imagine the 205/50 would be a good choice for the street.
