I've posted about these issues before, but I figured I'd try again.
I bought a 07/96 540i/6 in September last year. By the time November rolled around, I had removed the CDV and had begun to notice clunk and chatter coming from clutch and transmission.
I assumed that replacing the clutch and flywheel would fix things. I've put maybe 4,000km since I replaced the clutch, etc.
I replaced:
Luk Dual Mass Flywheel. 06/96 forward DF-020.
Luk Clutch Set 03-040
All the shifter Bushings
All the shifter Linkage, save for the selector rod
Engine and Transmission Mounts
Rear Main Seal
New Redline fluid - I tried D4-ATF first, then switched to something else, MT-90 iirc.
After all this, I figured it would shift and drive wonderfully. I was completely wrong. Over the months since I replaced everything, the clutch and transmission have gotten progressively more clunky and chattery.
Main symptoms:
Chattering sound and feel from the clutch when launching in first or reverse. Felt in the shifter too.
Clutch pedals movement isn't smooth, it feels like it clicks or clunks over something. Felt in the shifter also.
If Clutch is disengaged or re-engaged while moving in gear, a similar clunk is felt. It feels like the clutch chatters in and out of place.
Overall, the car is frustrating to drive, especially after spending a fair chunk of change replacing everything related to the transmission.
My mechanic continues to say that it's normal for a big brawny getrag 6 speed to feel this way, and that nothing else in the system would cause issues like this (master, slave, etc).
There was an incident where the car rolled backwards on a hill in gear, no parking brake. I heard a click click as the car lurched backwards. My indy said they checked the input shaft for play when they did the work, but I'm unconvinced.
I'm at the end of my rope with this car, I could really use some help or suggestions hunting down whats causing this. I'm fearful that the transmission itself is damaged somehow from the hill incident.
