View Full Version : E39 Can only talk to DME & EGS with INPA/DIS

I have an issue with my e39. Today it started to run with reduced power intermittently (well it did that for my wife, I have not been able to replicate it).
I plugged in my diagnostic kit with DIS running, when I attempted to do an auto detect I got the following error screen:

People that know me on this forum will know that I am pretty good at setting these kits up, so I am pretty certain that it is not the kit that is at fault. Another reason why I'm so sure is because in getting the same error on two different kits with two different interfaces (on ADS/OBD & a K+DCAN cable). I used these kits on this very car very recently & there were no issues doing auto detect, etc.

I continued with a manual identification, but the only modules I could access were the DME & the EGS module. The DME had a Camshaft error but it was "not currently present". I could not communicate with any other module in DIS.

I closed DIS & I tried INPA, the same issue, I could only communicate with DME & EGS.

Then I disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes & connected a circuit tester across the terminals to drain down any residual current. When I reconnected the battery I fired up INPA & I chose at random to connect to the KOMBI. I could read faults & activate items. So I tried once again to do a full DIs auto detect, the same thing happened again, no auto detect & back to only being able to connect to DME & EGS. Again I opened INPA & now no connection was possible to KOMBI.
I picked the KOMBI at random it was the same issue for all modules (except DME/EGS). Also worth noting is that everything is working as it should, lights, instrument cluster, central locking, climate control, radio, etc.

Anybody got any ideas what is wrong? Any tips on how to troubleshoot, or better still resolve?

hi maybe the pin #8 in your car obd is intermittent ?

Hi, I have sorted this today, the problem was definitely down to to the interface cable. I reconnected DIS with the ADS:OBD interface cable & all went as it should. See the screen shots below:

I am almost 100% percent positive that the issue was a result of using my other K+D CAN interface on the e39, as you say pin 8 is probably the culprit.
