View Full Version : Resetting fuel & coolant temp gauges after cluster pull?

I pulled out my cluster last week. Found the speedometer had broken, so I put it back in. Tach works fine & the coolant & fuel gauges DO WORK but they are way out of range.
They peg full counter clockwise when I hook then up(the wiring in the back). When I start the car they move a bit. The coolant does move as it gets hot.(at 215 it is barely out of the blue area) and the fuel level barely passes the low fuel light.
Is there a way I can pull of the needles & re position them?
I have not read a single thing on the gauges acting like this once replacing the cluster for a pixel fix. I read something about it on a M5 write up but we obviously do not have the same cluster.

you may have damaged the unit. The gauges should go back to normal after you do the job.

not fully healed yet. About another month. Thank You for asking.
How could I have damaged it? I did nothing to it. With the exception of take off the plastic cover. Was gonna see if I can fix the pixels but never got that far. I know the cluster had "work" done on it because it was tampered with AND it is not original too boot. Has a manufacture date of '04 on it & the factory seal was cut. It was shoddly put back together it looks like & I knocked something loose( I can see copper wrapped around the speedo needle shaft) .
On the M5 boards they say that the needles do not have a "pivot point" like the tach & speedo and need resetting(pull of the needles & set them in place with full tank of fuel & engine full warm) whenever the cluster is pulled. The instruments have the same part numbers between the M5 & E38, just laid out different. So I figured it would be similar steps.
Like I said, they still work(minus speedo) just way off the mark...the tach is dead on & works perfect.

Well if its from 04, then its not an e38 cluster. It must be from an x. S they have different gas tanks and methods of reading coolant temp. So it needs to be coded to your car to read properly.
Either find someone who can code it, or get an e38 cluster. I have a couple if you want to replace it.

It was replaced in '04. Not FROM an '04. My guess is under warranty. I am having a friend who works for BMW run the VIN to see what warranty repair was ever done.
