Hi all thanks for your help beforehand.
I have a friend who lost her keys and is getting no help from the dealer
seems she has requested too many copies and after a number sets the dealer will not sell her another.

They will only sell her a new lock and ignition sets in take the old locks out and replace them with new ones.

Is there anyone in the aftermarket that can help? or is there another solution?

If you truly cannot get another key you could put in a new (used) set like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-e38-Lock-Set-1996-98-W-Key-EWS-/300865302121?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item460cf82e69&vxp=mtr

You would still have to have it programmed & installed though so it would not be easy.

The dealers option is terrible, would probably be over $3000 to have that done.

Dealer will require you to purchase an EWS as well. I believe the 10 key limit is due to the program limitations of the EWS. At least from the dealer.

Might try these guys to see what options they have:

Those guys are great mayor chuck but they come with key blanks & no way to cut a new key from an old one. Def. a terrible situation. GL OP

Good to know. I just had them bookmarked so I knew they had helped someone here with something along these lines. Maybe one of the part out guys can put together a package with DME, EWS, keys/cylinder/locks. No easy answers for sure.

I found something neat on ebay. It is used to fix the exact situation you are in.

Seriously, it sounds like it would be easier to find at least two sets of keys AND Waldo than to fix the problem with a bypass module. wtf...

I would assume that its 10 sets of keys over the life of the car. i.e. from 1996-2013. over 17 years and many different owners that doesn't seem completely unlikely.

I've owned somewhere between 85 and 90 cars over the past 20+ years. I've never lost a set of keys (even spares). I understand how it's possible to lose a set of keys. I get maybe losing a couple sets in 15 years or so, but losing a set of keys every 1.5 years is a bit much. It's losing a set of keys every 547 days. It really is excessive.

lol didn't say I do it, but not everyone may be as good. maybe keys just never changed hands between owners.

I broke my key and the chip fell out. thought about installing the bypass module.
