My '97 540i while I drive and come out of turns it doesn't center the steering wheel, it starts to but then it stays turned so I have to straighten it. Any clues about what could be wrong? Car has 250k miles I added ATF fluid to the power steering resivour and it still does it.

My guess would be something is off with the rear alignment. An old car of mine did the same thing, and it turned out to be a rear wheel toed in too far. I imagine there are some other things that could cause this as well though.

I'm with feeshta. I would have the alignment checked first off. Not sure what it could be other ways. Most likely suspension related.

if i were in your shoes, i would jack the front of the car@idle and turn your steering wheel lock-to-lock to feel/hear for any noises or resistance.

I think it could be the suspension being so old and worn, maybe it's fighting with that.

Is the steering wheel straight or off to the side a little when your actually going in a straight line?
Its also possible to have a dragging brake.
