Jesus...was the passenger or steering wheel? No advice... but damn I can't imagine that spontaneously happening.

No passenger bag on a '92. That must have been interesting, to say the least. I'm guessing you have either a short somewhere, or one of your front crash sensors (the orange boxes under the hood) must have malfunctioned. It's very difficult to get an airbag to go off on it's own like that. They require a 12-volt signal, so not just a grounded wire. I'm not really sure if just replacing the wheel-mounted bag is a good idea, in case it goes off again. I think I might consider leaving it disconnected. I have a good steering wheel airbag you can have if you want (I noticed you're local).

please tell me you have a video of this!! The mental video of that was hilarious. That would scare the $#!+ out of me! Glad you didn't wreck. Sorry I have no helpful input.

Is an airbag failure like this possible with age? I've always heard you should replace air bags every 10 years or so, but I can honestly say that no one in my family including myself has ever thought of replacing them (and all of our cars, except my moms, is pre-2000)

Thats scary. Would be hilarious if it was a test drive though.

Were you in the car when it happened? I'm thinking your old man jumped some railroad tracks behind your back :rofl

That's happened to me, shitsux. Depending on how much damage the airbag caused to the wheel you could just replace the airbag only but I decided to install a non-airbag BMW wheel so it looks factory and passes safety inspection here.
