I just bought a 2001 540i that has an issue with the remotes interacting with the car. After researching I checked fuse #53 in the trunk and it was indeed blown. I replaced it and tried to reprogram the remotes. I attempted the reprogram around 10-15 times with both remotes to no avail (I got zero response). At this point the remotes are still not working.

Note: The fuel door lock actuator not working led me to fuse #53. However after replacing the fuse (which is still good) the lock is still not engaging.

What should I check next? Did I miss something?

It could be the battery in your key. In 2001, you have a diamond-shaped key, correct? If the fuse did not blow a second time, it's probably the battery. They can be replaced by cutting open the key and soldering a new battery in. Do a search and you should find a DIY guide.

Disconnect the fuel door latch and try again.

ok I think I must have just had the button pressing rhythm wrong. I got it tonight. I also went ahead and unplugged the non-working fuel latch to keep from blowing the fuse. Thanks.
