Hey guys, not sure where to look. Didn't see anything while glancing through the FAQ or anything, so I'm just wondering if anybody can tell me the rims I have on my car (bought it like this). A quick google search revealed these arn't the stock rims so I'd like to know what their name is.

They came off the E39 M5. That hub is a 74 and yours is a 72. Im assuming these are reps because they look like them.

How can you tell they're reps? What does the hub size mean to me?

Those are Style 65 replicas(most likely).

The wheels those are trying to copy are the stock wheels from an e39 M5 which come in 18" staggered form. Also, the M5 wheels have a unique Lead?Magnesium? based paint which gives the wheels a unique colour. Here is a pic for reference:

It looks like the wheels on your car are 17"(i think), which means they are replicas. It also means it is hard to tell what hub size or offsett the are.

Looks awesome anyway! What color is that?

Yeah I was looking around, definitely no gunmetal finish. As replica's, does that mean the value is basically nil? What about the build quality?

Down in front.

Beautiful color!

On mine? I think just silver. On the actual E39 M5 rims it looks like some kind of brushed nickel or gunmetal.

they have some value for sure. A few hundred bucks if the tires are good. The build quality is reasonable most likely but i guess the potholes in your area will test them...

The car- what's the paint name? I love dark gray/silver E34s. Mine's Akrtisgrau.

If you want some better pictures I started a thread earlier! Look for my name a few threads down. But honestly I'm not too sure. I'm still learning about my car :lol3

I'll go have a look! And thanks, it's a unique color, pretty uncommon. very uncommon for a 540/6.

Yeah that's awesome. Looks pretty rare. Off-topic question, when you say /6 do you mean six-speed?

Yessir! It's just the shorthand way, I guess. 540i 6 speed= 540i/6. Your car; 525i 5 speed= 525i/5.

Does it have side skirts (a body kit), or is it painted?

BMW style 65 were offered in silver and shadow chrome on the e39 M5 in 18x8 and 18x9.5. These look like they could be a replica wheel in a 17" squared setup. If you want a nice clean stock look, I think these are a good choice.

I don't think it has side skirts, and I'm almost positive that's the original paint.

What's a squared setup? Yeah they do have a nice look, but I guess the shadow chrome was the colour I was thinking of. They would look great with that.

What I mean, is that only the 1995 e34's (except the M5) had the lower body sections painted the color of the car:

Mine is the car on the left (the Calypso), and it's a 95. The white car is a pre-95 e34, and it has black lower panels.

So I assume yours was painted afterwards. Maybe an entire body respray or just the lower sections.

A squared set up is when all the rims and tires are the same size all the way around. The benefit is the ability to rotate your tires, whereas a staggared setup will not allow you to rotate.

Ah, thanks. If you run staggared, can you still swap the left and right tires, or does that not really do anything?

That depends on wether or not you have symmetrical tires. Tire rack has some good reading about that and more.

You could always dismount the tires in a staggared configuration and swap them from left to right, but you would want to keep the tire rolling in the same direction. The outter sidewall would then become the inner sidewall on the opposite side of the car.

Ah that makes sense. Doesn't sound like the ideal setup.

I'll check them out shortly.

Not from a rotational point of view, but then there's the argument for more aggressive handling charateristics and a more stylish appearance.
Trade off for convenience factor and longer tread life?

I think you will find that most people on here are wanting to go with a staggared setup.

Makes sense. I'll have to do some more research on that though, and probably figure out what I've got going on. Thanks for the pointers.

Those are style 65's 17" reps for sure, the color is not some magnesium paint, it's just shadow chrome. The build is okay on them. They are squared aka all 4 the same. In staggered the rears are usually an inch or more wider.

Sweet thanks. But how can YOU tell I'm running squared? It's that apparent from the pictures? There's more in my other thread, I can't tell myself.

You can see from the pictures that the rears aren't wider than the front. There would be more lip on the rears if they were wider.

Ah good catch. Didn't think to look at that.
