Yesterday morning, suddenly the instrument cluster stopped working. None of the dials moved and no lights.

I have checked the fuses, disconnected the battery to try a reset. None worked.

Took it to a good shop and they have diagnosed saying its the instrument cluster which needs to be replaced and they can't (only dealership can).

I can get a used cluster online, but how to I reprogram it to show the correct milage etc.

car: BMW 325i, 2003.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions/comments

With a little search: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1709868

It's not a trivial operation if you want to recode properly a used cluster.

You need to virginize it (reset km/miles to zero). It may involve to remove an eeprom to reprogram it that is under the dials, and then set the VIN and code it.

It's quite easy with a brand new cluster since you only need to set VIN and code it.

Setting VIN and coding it must be done in ley position 1.

After correctly setting VIN and coding it, next time key would be in position 2, mileage and sia operations will be restored from LCM

Did you find out how to reset it? My instrument cluster went dead on my 20013 325i last Saturday. Where did you buy your replacement instrument cluster?
