So a friend just bought an 02 Cooper S. Actually, traded even for a late 90's Ford Ranger :eyecrazy
Not sure how he pulled that off, but anyway. It does have an issue I hope you can help with. I searched first, but as many know, our search feature here sucks.
It has an oil pressure light that comes on at idle. The sec any throttle is applied, it goes out. I havent seen the car yet, but I asked the obvious questions. Did you check the oil? Did you change it recently?
He says the dipstick reads that its full. He had the oil changed and the shop let him bring his own oil. He brought a 5+ quart jug of 5-30 syn. They gave it back to him after the change and it still had some oil in it. They said they drained the old and then poured the new in till it read full, and it only took 4.5.
Is that normal? I know BMW motors well, but from what I understand, these are Slowpar (mopar) motors. What do they take? Every BMW I've owned took 8 quarts. Thats everything from a 2.5l - 4.4l.
He is coming over tomorrow to let me look it over and I would like to be prepared.
One last question. I have a BMW diagnostic laptop with DIS, INPA, PROGMAN, etc...
Can I hook up INPA to this car? Is there a 20 pin diag port in the engine bay, or do I use the OBD port in the car?
Thanks In Advance :alright

you should be able to use the OBD port

I would remove the oil filter and look to see if there are pieces of the bypass or drain back plunger sitting in there.

Well, got the car today. Its not an S. The owner had bought a oil pressure sensor for it and wanted me to put it in. So I did. I told him it wasnt the issue, and sure enough it wasnt.
I suggested he go buy a new filter and a replacement "tower" that mounts in the filter assembly. Not sure what you would call it. Figured I'll do an oil change and see if it has the tower assembly in it, and while its apart I can check the bypass valve as well. What would you recomend in order to replace the bypass valve? Do I need to replace the whole oil filter assembly?
I was able to hook up to inpa using the obd port. I didnt try anything else though. Are there other programs that work as well? DIS, NCSExpert? I know Progman works on Mini.
Despite not being an S, its still a fun little car. New shocks, Brakes, Tires, lower control arms, sway bar end links. Its a 1 owner car too. INPA gave it a clean bill of health. Super smooth motor, no codes.

Hey nick! We have an 05 cooper S. these are neon motors.
Also, go look at northamericanmotoring, and motoringalliance, and mini2. These are much better mini sites.

Nice. I almost bought an 02 Cooper S back in 03. I came from an american car background. Got sick of always driving crap cars and decided to give das Germans a try.
Almost bought the Mini, but couldnt get over how small it was. Since it would be my wifes daily. I liked it alot and figured since it was a BMW of sorts, I'd check out the 3 series. Have owned BMW's ever since.
This particular car came from a shady dealership. Just found a coolant leak in the radiator. Gonna have to rip the front end off to replace it. Not to mention they told him (18 yo kid) that it was a Cooper S. And yea, its not.

Hi noodlesandsam,
I am new to the bimmerforums, well sorta new its been many years since Ive owned a BMW, how ever I was here just doing a search in the Mini area because I own a 2005 R53 and wanted to find others that might be using NCSexpert. So I did a search and this was one of the threads.
I am writing knowing this is an old thread but I wanted to address the information you have mentioned about the First Gen Mini Coopers using a Dodge Neon Engine. That engine IS a BMW engine. It was designed by BMW and the only hand Chrysler had in it was manufacturing it as well as using it in the European market in some of their vehicles such as their version of the PT Cruiser. I know Wiki explains it in a way that makes it sound as if Chrysler designed the engine and I am sure this American motor company would love to take full credit for it but the truth is BMW designed the engine for the MINI Cooper. The engines used in neons are a different animals all together.

Its amazing how much incorrect information floats around on forums, isn't it?
