If you have not a clue and want to save a lot of time searching, downloading, installing etc, have a look here: http://bmtechnic.co.uk/
The best all in one package, nothing to do to install this, just a couple of buttons to click. No file to modify etc...it will just work. As long as you are using Windows 32 bits.

Just to note the cables provided with the BMTechnic kit are not ADS compatible. Why does that matter?
Well if you plan on using the kit to diagnose your 1997 740i (e38) then you'll need an ADS compatible interface cable along with a laptop/PC that has a Serial port or a PCMCIA serial adapter. A USB-Serial converter will not work for the ADS protocol, it has been tried by others & not worked.
A compromise would be to buy a BMTechnic software/cable pack & then seek support from the vendor (who gets good praise for his support on many forums) to make the software work with an ADS interface sourced elsewhere.
This website here is a source that has been used by many on this very forum to supply an ADS interface:

US E38 are ODBII after 1995. So he just needs a 20 pin DLC ODBII interface.

i also heard of a gert cable? which is around 100 dollars. is this the same cable you are referring me to?
also is DIS mainly for coding, and INPA for diagnostic. what is the functionality of NCS? the website provided for me on NCS only shows a walkthrough on a E46. What options are offered for this software on the E38?

DIS - Dealer level diagnostic a fault troubleshooting tool (excellent) DIS v44 also had some coding/programming options but this was phased out in later DIS versions
INPA - Factory Diagnostic tool, quick fault reader, error clearing but no trouble shooting aspect
NCS - Factory coding software, all in German but easy to follow once you stick to what's covered in user guides
WINFKP - Factory programming/flashing tool. Update software versions of modules, etc.
Progman - Dealer coding & programming tool, used for software updates, retrofits & car key memory coding. The coding function is very limited compared to NCS. Also you really need to have your car hooked up to a power supply to safely run this software, especially in programming mode.
That BM Technic black cable will work fine for you.

As far as coding my car, i only would want to code three different types of things. Code the car to roll windows up via keyfob, code vehicle to lock after certain mph, and code vehicle so a/c doesn't come on everytime i start the car.. also want to clear CEL lights
trans failsafe codes, read codes, and erase codes for Airbag system so i need INPA and Progman. I emailed about the bmtechnic software. So im awating a price.

You'll need INPA 3.01 with EDIABAS 6.4.7 and NCS Expert..
