Anybody else have a problem with the e39 radio display?

My mom has a 2000 528iT and she just called me with a strange problem with her car. She said she got in the car tonight and when she turned it on the radio display started flashing from not so bright to bright, but stayed legible the whole time. Apparently this is the first time she's driven the car at night for a while, so I'm thinking it has something to do with when she turned the headlights on the display is flashing back and forth between regular brightness and night time (headlights on) brightness. Anybody else ever have this happen? Any idea what might be the problem?
