I have been checking out the new X1 and 3 series sedan lately, and I feel that the location of the handbrake makes the interior of the cars looks old school. Is it just me or what? Most of the cars these days place the handbrake next to the button where you open the hood.

I hate the interior of the new 3 series and X1. The hand brakes are located to the left of the I-drive controller. Seems pretty normal to me..

I don't know if I'd call it "old school" or just BMW. The 3 series has always had a legitimate hand brake vs a foot brake.

I hated footbrakes. If you watch the video till the end...is that what op is talking about? I haven't seen an x1.

Does that mean you can't drift in the new bimmers with the new handbrake?

You can since the handbrake is located just right below the transmission stick. I posted this message because I thought all cars these days use footbrake rather than handbrake. For example, Lexus, Audi, Mercedes, etc. don't have handbrake anymore, (at least for models that came out in the past few years.) I just got used to seeing the footbrake and those fancy electrical instruments located around the transmission stick, and I thought a handbrake looks old-school because it takes up all the space for those instruments.

I like the look of an actual handbrake in my moms x1, any other kind is weird to me.

If you want to talk old school, my '72 Chevy pickup has a foot brake, and my '66 Dodge Dart has a dash mounted handbrake to the left of the steering wheel and below the instrument cluster. If anything, floor mounted handbrakes are a bit newer. :)

It's much more common to have a foot brake on cars that have a column shifter rather then a console/floor shifter.

My 99 Oldsmobile has a foot brake. They were common when a lot of cars had bench front seats since it would be odd to have a random handle in the middle of the floor.

You don't and it can't be fwd, either rwd or awd.
