Hey guys and gals, I have a friend that owns a 2000 750il protection model that he was going to fix up. It got rear ended lightly, but the damage is mostly superficial. He has all of the body parts to fix it. He said he would sell it to me for a $1000. It's intriguing after reading about this high end luxury super car and apparently only a little over a thousand of them were made. Some of the things I read about maintaining something like this make me think twice, including three ECU's to run that v12 beast. Just wondering what others thoughts were on this vehicle and whether I should jump on it or not. Thanks.

I wouldn't take that car if it was given to me.
if the TB's go out it will cost 3K or more to fix. MPG = sucks, oil leak city, which most BMW have that problem. maint is just terrible.

You're funny, and not that knowledgeable. How to TBs go out? $3k to fix? I think you might need to get back in your own lane. None of my three BMWs leak any oil at all, maybe it is just the maintenance you do on your cars that is bad.
As for the E38, confirm that it is a protection model. I believe that all E38 750 came with insulated glass (different from bullet resistant glass in the protection), so don't go by that. Run the VIN. If it is not a true protection, pass on it, unless you can get the work done pretty cheaply. E38s are going pretty cheap right now.

lets see i have 8.5 yrs exp with bmw. i hae worked on many of these cars. they are JUNK.
but anyway, a EML control module is msrp at $2200, the TB msrp is at $1650 each. when a TB fails it takes out the EML control unit. At my dealer when the EMl fails we replace the EML control unit and both TB. so my $3k quote was a lil short. these are prices off realoem.com. I can guarantee you the dealer will be more.
do you want to rethink your prev statement. BMW had major issues with the TB on V12 cars.
but anyway OP if your money and your friend that has the car, so its your choice. IMO i would part it out.

Easiest way to tell if its a protection model: Does it have a sunroof/moonroof? If yes, its not a protection model. It would have a cool factor, but other than that I wouldn't want one. The rear windows don't roll down, the front ones have super thick glass that eats regulators, its slower than a non-protection model, worse on gas, handles worse, requires run-flat tires, still has the maintenance of a V12, etc...
You can also get used throttle bodies for about $100 give or take; you don't have to get raped by the dealer for parts. That said, if you couldn't afford a $100k car new, I wouldn't buy one used with 12 years on it. You are still fixing a $100k car, not a $1k car.

to your knowledge I have 8.5 yrs exp with BMW. I worked on a few of these cars.
according to realoem.com the EML control module (it controls the TB) list for $2200, and the TB list for $1650 each and there is 2 of them ( a total of $3300 in TB) , so my $3k guess is a lil off. BMW has major issue with these TB. If you dont believe me, buy one a drive it. they WILL FAIL. Wen a TB fails it takes out the EML control module. also it has 2 DME's at a whopping $1200 each. They also fail.
for any work to be done on this car you have to pull the intake.
do you want to open mouth and insert foot now or later?
Ask anyone that has ever owned a BMW 750 V12. they will tell you maint is a B***h to do. they are money pits. There is a reason they sell for less than the same year 740.

:banghead: What are your credentials to comment about this? I've owned three, from when they were current until 7 or 8 years ago.
Only a fool pays $3k for the throttle bodies. An entire parts car or two (or three as illustrated here) can be bought for that.
Any V-12 car isn't for the faint of heart or those who cannot do it themselves but they are not any worse than any other complicated luxury car of the era, probably better.
Do you really think the person who buys a V-12 sedan gives a flying F about fuel economy?

Honestly that car sounds like a good deal to me. The e38 750iLP is about as exclusive as e38s got in the United States. There are a few features that will definitely show that it is a protection model, the rear windows don't roll down, the rear center armrest does not fold up and usually contains controls for the radio and front passenger seat. It absolutely will not have a sun roof. There is a light in the middle of the headliner where the motion sensor would normally be.
They are exceptionally quite cars and also exceptionally heavy. They needed the V12 to make them bearable to drive. It isn't even as fast as a normal V8 740iL, due to all of the extra weight it has to lug around.
Also to all of those who compalain about the V12 having two ECUs, when was the last time you had an ECU crap out on you? Also in the 3 years of being in the e38 section of bimmerforums I have never once heard of a person needing to replace the ECUs on their M73 engine. On top of that, not all M73 engines have two ECUs, some just have one. The M73 engine is about at bullet proof as BMW engines get, it is a very simple single overhead cam design.

Came in here to post this.
Also, I'd buy wrecked 750iLPs all day for $1000. Just make sure its an actual protection model. It will say "750iLP" on the door sill, and most will not have a sunroof.

Ooo, gosh. 8.5 years of experience and paying MSRP. You are certainly knowledgeable. Back in your own lane, please.

If you have some mechanical skills and can do your own maintenance, then go for it. Every petrolhead should own a V12 at some point. If you don't want the car, then let me know and I'll buy it from your friend. No kidding.
