DME's for a vehicle that new are specific to each vehicle, they are programmed and encoded to the car. You cannot use a DME from a different car once it has been in another vehicle. AFAIK

the dme and ews and key are from a juck car. a guy from bmw said if u get the dme and ews that read's the key with key cyl and put it my car and and i did and the car crank but did not start so the ews is reading the key

since you have a e46 you are lucky, you can swap DME's from 1 car to teh other. you need to have it aligned to the car, but since they are dif years, you still may have an issue. did the numbers on the dme's match, if not than that might be an issue. BMW loves to do mid-year changes, and when they do they change alot of things. you cna do more harm than good by putting in an incorrect DME in your car.

I think the actual DMEs are the same electronically. The "new" DME will definitely require updating to match your car's configuration.

the part # do not match but if the new dme set didnt work, the car wouldnt crank. but it does crank so the ews is reading the key that came with the dme set. the fuel pump comes on and i have 12v to the coils but no signal im getting 0.3v for signal and no spark

I had the same prob on my 96 M3, dme got wet. the dealer said they couldnt reprogram a used one (i call BS impretty sure they can they were just trying to sell me a knew one for $1300) instead of going through the whole trouble i sent mine in to AA tuning and they disactivated the ews on the dme, it got back to me 4 days later and bam my car started right up.
