Is it possible? If yes, then please tell me how (what size hub centric rings, adapter, whatever).
NOTE: e39 style 42s NOT z3 style 42s
17x8 et 20 NOT 17x7.5 et 41

Yes, I got them on my car.
Ok, you're probably talking about e39 17 inch variant .. yes, those will work too with rings and skinny tires.

There are multiple versions of the style 42 wheels. The e39 ones do not fit (as easily/properly), but there are ones with a 41 offset, which are the ones you should look for. There are also staggered sets (7.5/8.5) and the wheels came in one and two piece design.

If you have the e39 17" then you'll need a hubcentric ring adapter. The one that adapts from 74mm bore to a 72mm bore. You can get them on ebay for about $15. Plastic or aluminum doesn't matter. You'll also probably need to roll your rear fenders or at least run 205/45/17 max. I know some guys say they run 225/45/17 with no fender roll but I never got it to work. the offset is too low.
Super nice rims on an e36. Congrats. I got mine for a good price but they needed to have the barrels stripped and refinished. It took me about 8 hours per rim to do it.

I run 225/45/17 in the front and 245/45/17 in back. And Coilovers as low as they go. Minimal rolling of the fenders to make em work.

Yeah I'm talking about the e39 ones sorry for not mentioning that. Man 205/45/17 sounds super skinny...

You have confused me..
Is tire stretching a choice or do I HAVE to because of the wheel size?

Oh gotcha. I was saying if you choose to run a 205/45/17 size tire, you would have to stretch it on the rim. I got regular sized tires on my 42's and they fit fine

you can always get a set off of an e46 with proper offsets and no need for rings. Mine are off an e46 17x8 et47 but dont have much lip, I have seen a set in sweden on an e46 touring with nice lip action

Ive been running mine with camber and on coil overs dropped to the ground for a while. I got small tires that were stretched on pretty good. I love these rims on my sedan e36. get em on!
