My suspension is pretty crap (NYC potholes) and I was wondering where and which struts I should get for my car. It has about 55k miles on it and just searching around, I see prices for struts ranging from about $40 to several hundreds. What is the difference or are they the same type of strut, but just "non-performance".
What brand/model do you guys recommend? I care more about comfort than performance.
Thanks for any help

Bilstein makes nice struts. They have a touring strut which is similar to BMW OEM. And they have a sport strut, for lowered suspensions.
The BMW OEM Sachs are nice struts.

I have installed Bils, OEM which is now owned by ZF no matter if it says Sachs/Boge and Koni. Where you live don't every consider Bil Sports unless you literally want to bounce over expansion strips and take the full force of potholes. Bil touring damped more than OEM but Koni is adjustable which is what I would do since you can dial the damping down so it is a softer ride than stock. Same with the shocks.
Bils typically last forever but too harsh for your streets. My vote is Koni even if more expensive...

Sachs and KYB share the same bunk bed. KYB is your best option for all around, even though they tend to soften up after 30k or so. Monroe is always good for a cheap option for a good strut. and a good warranty.

what's the average price on all of these. Price is a big factor (one of the reasons why I don't want to get sports version)
I'm looking online, but it seems like it's hard to find these parts.

In parts cost:
Monroe: Strut Bearing plate $40 x 2
Strut Front $77-85 x 2
Shocks $ 44 x 2
Spring Bushing Seats $8 x 2
Sway Bar links $33-45 x 2
KYB
Strut $107 x 2
Bearing Plate $ 75 x 2
Shocks $ 75 x 2
Billy's Meh not worth IMO unless you triple the price for some HD's
Go to amazon after you visit manufacture website for parts specifications.
Rear shocks can be difficult to change, struts are always lethal.

is your car with Sport Package? My understanding is that you must select the type of struts (sport/non) based on the rear shocks; otherwise you'd have to change all 4 of them = more $$$

How come for the kYB, you don't need the Bearing plate and sway bar links?
I don't intend to change my rears. The mechanic said they were fine.

My car is not sports package and I only intend to change the front struts
