I got my timing chain cover in the mail today from Bavarian Auto recyclers. I am going to attempt to replace it this weekend, but I need your help.

The front of the car was taken out by a tractor trailer tire on the highway, so there is no radiator, front bumper, or the like. I am thinking I will probably take out the entire front end of the car so I can sit down and work in that area unobstructed. The good news, also, is that someone took off the harmonic balancer and bolt already. So I am good to go in that respect. I ordered new gaskets and also a sprocket tool from pelican parts. I am going to use the DIY camshaft locking tool with a piece of keystock and two C clamps.

Please guide me on how to remove the case cover so that I don't screw up the timing of the engine. This is my one and only real fear of the job.

Note: I also have to replace a shattered oil filter housing and oil pan. I have new parts and gaskets for both as well. I also ordered a new valve cover gasket while I was at it.

I am looking at the Bentley and TIS websites now, but sometimes they have you do steps that are not necessary. I want to do this as quickly, easily, and correctly, as possible.

Update: Why is the BMW TIS website down!? :(

The oil filter housing is pretty easy. You have to remove the alt and vanos line then disconnect the oil pressure sender unit. Then its 6 bolts that hold the housing on. Make a map of where those bolts go. At least 3 of them are all different lengths

I don't know why removing the timing case cover would have anything to do with the sprokets or cams but here's my DIY for it.

I thought the problem was the chain gears obstruct removal of the top cover bolts, hence the need to lock the cams and cam sprocket tool.

I have a complete engine on a stand. I'll take the valve cover off and confirm but I am very sure that won't be needed
