Hello all,
This week I have some spare time and will be doing an R & R of the torque converter in my 740i with 186k. My converter has the common shuddering issue.

I have all the relevant tools, transmission jack and a two post car lift in my shop. I'm wondering if there's a decent write up somewhere out there regarding the removal procedures. I'm looking mainly for other's tips and tricks as I've removed many an automatic transmission in my days, just never one from an E38. I'd appreciate any hands you can lend me in my search.

Anyways, for those of you whom are interested, A-1 performance transmission and converter in Vancouver, Washington will be rebuilding my core to my specs. I've had converters for race car and trans-brakes built with A-1 in the past. I would highly recommend them if you're thinking about rebuilding your tconv.

My $0.02 :stickoutt ,

It's pretty simple on these cars. Especially if you have a tranny jack and a 2 post lift.
Once you remove the exhaust and heatshield around the driveshaft, the rest is pretty straight forward.

If you've removed a transmission before, its just like any other car, nothing to it. Just use the right E-torx for the bellhousing bolts, there are two sizes, e12 (4 along the top) and e14 (8) if I remember.

Now, what's the deal with the realignment procedure when re-installing everything?

Also, what's the best way to get to the top 4 bell housing bolts?

Transmission is about 1/2 the way out (just have to removed the drive-shaft and bell-housing bolts now)

Thanks,

I did an M62 engine replacement before, so the procedure wasn't much different. I unfastened the two E12 bolts from the top (there's only 2, the rest are E14), and two E14 bolts also from the top. I had the coolant hoses removed since I had to remove them anyways, but they might be in your way.

The rest I unfastened from the bottom. I usually leave one of the bottom bolts alone and take the rest completely out. Once the jack is secure, remove the mounts/brace and the last bolt, and voila it comes out.
