My drivers side window is inoperative. I took the door card off to repair it and fix the window while I was at it. Once I had it off, I noticed that the rivets were gone and there were bolts in it's place. Someone, at some point, had replaced the motor. So, I am skeptical that the motor is bad (but it may well be). When I hit the switch on the center console I just here a click sound, coming from behind the dash near the glove box.

Solutions Tried:
I tried to switch the window switch from drivers side to passengers side, and it is not the switch itself that is bad.

Possible sources:
-are there two independent relays that control the driver and passengers window motors? (If there is only one relay, then clearly it is working fine because the passengers window works, but if there are two relays, this is a faster/easier/cheaper test/fix to do next.)

-is there a fuse for each side of the window? If so, I can check that (again, free to check, no hassle).

-the motor/regulator itself is bad: worst case, most expensive to fix and most time consuming. I want to take the motor out as a last resort.

No signs of any issues with the window before this? Did you disconnec the batter?

There are NO external relays for the windows. Everything is inside the ZKE on the circuit board. If you are hearing a click when you press the switch then the switch is sending a signal to the ZKE and the relay is closing. I really doubt its anything to do with the ZKE but if you rule out every thing else I have a spare that should work if you need it. I usually just to a junk yard and pull the ZKE and a few other modules and some other stuff then put it in a pile. One price for the whole thing and they never go through the pile.

Since you have bolts and not rivets Its an easy process to take the regulator off. Before you go that route try Pressing down on the glass as you press the switch. If the glass is all the way down then try lifting up from the bottom. A little extra pressure might do the trick. YOu could try disconnecting the glass from the regulator arms and see if less weight does the trick. Just be very very carefull. spaces in there are tight and its easy to pinch a finger or worse if that thing decides to work.

Normally I would say test for power at the window motor but Ive never researched it enough to know which wires to test.

This is for the M3, I've never tried the window until now, since I am restoring the interior. It's stuck closed and wont move. The passengers side moves fine. I've been disconnecting/connecting the battery frequently when I work on the car.

I just realized that I have no idea how I would pull a used regulator from the junk yard because I wont have access to power tools to remove the rivets on the door. Maybe a hammer and a chisel to shear those bolts off?

I always use a cordless drill and new bits....lots of them fit into your pocket. Its hard to say what will be your final solution. I was playing around with my 94 vert and disconnecting the battery like you and it affected the windows in wierd ways. Sometimes I would be able to instantly use the window and sometimes it wouldnt work, sometimes it would go down but not up. Really strange but it eventually worked after about an hour or so. My guess is it had something to do with the Hall sensor in the motor.

Eventually it straightened itself out.
