97' 540i vs early 90's tuner car?

Coming home last night and observed an early 90's 240sx playing with some Mercedes sports car.It looked like a hatchback Kompressor series Mercedes.Anyway, I gave the beamer some gas and proceeded to pass them both. The Mercedes turns off and the 240sx continues cautiously behind me til we get to the next light. It turns red and I am first at the light but there are 2 other cars filling in the lanes beside me . The 240 takes a right at the light and comes out on the other side ready to take a right. Basically waiting for my light to turn green so he can catch up to me in traffic. Ok, so traffic is clear and we both get side by side. I notice this very high pitched sound coming from his car. Not like a turbo tho. Just an extremely annoying high pitched sound when ever he accelerated. WTF was that? Anyone know. Anyway, we get side by side and he revs confidently with a smirk and accelerates a few feet letting me know he wants to play. We both hit it at the same time going about 55mph. I immediately jumped about 3 car spaces ahead,but he starts pulling a little and managed to stay a consistent 1.5 car spaces behind me until I hit the brakes. I know those cars stock only came with 150hp so wtf do you think he had? Nitrous? turbo? SC? All I know is that thing sounded extremely annoying and very high pitched. Anyone take a guess?

Turbo 240 should easily keep up with 540i with the weight advantage so Im sure it just had some cheap exhaust or some cheap ebay noise maker :)

A stock 240 sx is nearly a full 2 seconds behind a stock 540i 0-60. It would take a turbo or some type of forced induction to make that 240 even come close to a 540i. He stayed about 1.5 car spaces behind me,but consistently. He had to have something giving him at least a hundred extra hp.

I would imagine that even if that 240sx had every bolt on mod imaginable that it would still not even be pushing more than 200hp at the crank. They only came with 150hp at the motor.

So, back on a serious note. Anyone, have an idea of what it could have had? turbo? I seriously doubt it just had bolt ons.

Here's a fun fact. Learned this while I was in Japan. There's more sr20's in the us than in Japan; and if you had to order one, it more than likely is easier, to find one through an importer and not a junkyard.

Sr with manual boost controller and 14PSI of boost will destroy your 540.

Sounds like a damaged turbo. I bent the fins on the stock turbo of the Eclipse I had, every time I hit boost it sounded like a jet engine...
