As you may know I replaced my 2 - 10" subs with 2 - 12" subs. Reason being I destroyed 2 sets of 10's so the stereo shop put 12's in which sound amazing, however not to their full potential along with the other speakers in the car. I'm considering an aftermarket deck such as the alpine IVE-W530. http://www.alpine-usa.com/data/product_images/636_1lg.jpg

New sub box.

Any suggests on trimming out the new deck to make it look somewhat stock? Is there a company that makes trim kits for our cars?

You're gonna have to fabricate one yourself (or get one done by your stereo shop... $600+ would be my guess). Plus if you weren't already aware, a 2-din can't fit into the opening without major modification to the ducting back there. So you really have two challenges when installing an aftermarket head-unit (or three if you have DSP).
Nice amp....any problems with the current draw? Is it running off the oe alternator and single batt?

I do have DSP so I guess it's going to suck. In regards to the ducting on a scale of 1-10 where would it fall to make a 2-din fit -10 being really hard.
As for the amp. Single battery - interior lights when they are on dim a bit but not bad. I just replaced the alternator - OEM 150amp. I'm happy so far. BTW I have ~197k so the original alternator was about toast.

Metra kit for E39 (http://metraonline.com/part/95-9307B)
This might work in terms of a faceplate, but you will have to fabricate the way to mount the radio. It's a lot of work to fit a double DIN radio and you will most likely have to cut up the HVAC box to fit it correctly. It's enough work that I won't do it and I do custom stereos all day long. Too many sensors and stepper motors on the HVAC box in the E38 to mess with it.
Now with a lot of companys going mechless on radios, the chassis on them are getting smaller. Parrot is coming out with the Asteriod Smart sometime in January. The depth on the chassis is about 4.5" versus a standard radio with a DVD drive that is over 6". I think with the shallower depth it will fit without any modifications to the HVAC.

Hacked metra kit. I used a tablet though. Cheaper with more options. The final fit is more flush.

The tablet is really cool. But I feel I need a real stereo that has a sub output to go directly to the amp. Plus I'd like to listen to the radio stations from time to time. I know.... Use the web for that but I don't want to pay for another data plan.

My thoughts exactly. I have a media head unit behind the tablet which runs to my sub and connects via Bluetooth to the tablet. I still have the fm radio. Voice dail and caller I'd through tablet talk, nav with offline maps. I'm working on steering wheel controls. You should check out mp3car.com

I don't need a deck that can handle DVDs or CDs.
