So, I want auto-on lights, I've got the rain sensing wipers as noted on E38.org, but the remaining associated costs going with OEM components is just ridiculous, $400-$600+, from what I've read

I don't want 'em _that_ badly, jeez.....:rolleyes

So can anyone tell me why this won't work for our cars?

Over the years, some have used similar kits. While a few of them worked without issue, I've also heard issues with the LKM after installation. Best of luck however you decide to accomplish this.

If it produces issues with the LKM you could probably bypass it via an LKM bypass box like the ones offered for some HID kits.

Hmmm... you've got me thinking about programming an IC to sit between the switch and LCM.

Do bi xenon lights work on prefacelift without using newer style headlights?

I would like the answer to that also.

Why not just use the switch? Putting aftermkt kits like that into these cars is asking for trouble.

I am about 70% toward changing over the head lights to auto mode. I have the LCM IV use out of a 2002 or later X5 or E39, Will need to add aditional program. New Dual Funtion Head Light Switch (E39), Change The Rain Sensor prism to rain and light prisim along with the a new Rain & Light sensor part # 61 35 6 923 954 that mounts directly behind the prisim in the Rear View Mirror window mount Housing. Waiting on replacing the windshield 2 chips on the driver side. Glass companies are nervious on replaceing the prisim have to remove the rain prisim and then remount the new Rain Light Prisim.
