the heat control valve on the firewall? water comes from the block and goes into the single hose bottom pump and out from the two valves to the heater core.
For the winter you can simply replace the heater valve with a brass T

I did this as well but a pain for the spring. So I purchased a manual heater valve the same as my Porsch 944. These are only $29 at any online parts place. Placed in line with the input line and a small piece of rubber hose. Tight fit but all I do now is switch the valve twice a year.

Go to catalogue at Pelican parts. Parts/944 1987
Do an internet search for 944-572-085-02-M53 (http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait=N&make=POR&model=944M§ion=VENTht&page=1&bookmark=0&part_number=944-572-085-02-M53) but Pelican parts is the best place iv'e found. Local parts place for 6 inches of rubber hose.
They sell BMW parts as well but not a good slection. Jobbers are better.
I looked at used BMW valves but the're all no good. Rubber diapgram goes and nobody sells just that part.
