Water pump question

What are some telltale signs of failing waterpump?
I just replaced my lower radiator hose and my car is making some funny sounds.
The idle was a little bit jumpy and I heard a somewhat "squeaking" sound. Could just be paranoia catching up to me, what do you guys think?

Grab the fan blades and try to wiggle them front to back. If they move, the bearing on the pump might be bad.

Bearing seems to be fine. No play in the blades. The squeaking has stopped now, actually. I read another thread somewhere about an e38 owner getting coolant to his DME? Could that cause a weird idle?
