I got my keys charged my battery and started up the car, I bled the coolant like the e38.org website told me and a bunch of air bubbles came out and then coolant started flowing so I closed it back up tight
Drove down the street and it started getting hot again, still no heat and now I'm hearing a sort of clanking noise when it idles and it speeds up when I accelerate the car

video? did you have the heat all the way up and the blower on full when bleeding? also did you continuously fill the expansion tank while bleeding?

This is a hard car to bleed. In addition to having the heat on, have the nose pointed up. The level has to be checked when stone cold. 6+ hours off.

Nose up is most important

another thing, it does take quite a few attempts at bleeding properly, maybe 4,5 times to get it perfect in my opinion

What they all said, plus as a newbie you must go to e38.org, read it over and over again. Lots of good info there.

nope........I always get it at the 1st attempt fully on every BMW i've ever worked on.

it's simple if you follow the TIS

You dont lift the nose up ever?

+1 to all the above. Other than the e-bragging.

You did the bleeding correctly, you just don't have enough coolant in the system.

I've done it both ways

if I'm doing cooling work, the nose happens to be up already so probably 75% of the time I've burped cooling systems (BMWs and non-BMWs) the nose has been up.

the part most people miss usually is to burp the heater valve prior to doing the whole system.

It's about procedure...If you follow procedure, you'll be fine pretty much always ;)

It's a 98

Blower is on max and at 90f
I had the nose up, bled it exactly like it told me on e38.org
I'm gonna post a video of the rattling, it'll be up tomorrow I'm gonna get my t2i and get a good video of the noise at idle and acceleration

It would really help if you put put year of your car like most of us do. That way people can be more of help to you. It takes the guessing out of the way. Good luck with your issues. Bleeding the system is really pretty easy to do. Just make sure you have coolant. Do not overfill.

This guy has it right most people just go to the step of bleeding with the bleeder valve first, which is incorrect and you'll end up with the issues the OP is having. Start the car with it completely cold and turn the heat temp up all the way and the blower on a lower setting then after the car has been started with the radiator cap loose rev the car up to 2k-2500k and hold for 5sec doing this 3-4 times and completing the process before the car warms up. This process drains all the air from the heater core system which is separate from the main cooling system. Fill the expansion tank tighten cap then bleed car with bleeder screw at operating temp, you should only have to do this process once and you will have full heat and no overheating issues, if you have issues after that you have not followed the procedure correctly, or you may have to bleed the screw again, this is all found on the TIS which is the process you ARE suppose to do!

pretty much

there's one thing I do in between all that too

when I fill the expansion tank, I fill it to the brim (liquid at the mouth of the tank and I open both the bleed screw and expansion tank cap and watch the bubbles come out. After the bubbling is done, I put the cap on and the bleed screw back in.

There really should be no reason to put the nose up if the expansion tank cap is the highest pt in the system BUT it doesn't hurt to do so ;)
