I did it. I got my first BMW. It's a 2010 335i , Alpine White, premium and sport package. It's bone stock and an absolute rocket.
A few quick things I noticed over my past cars: when I pull into the garage the front of the car is cooking hot. Even 3 hours after the car is shut off if If I pop the hood it is still VERY warm? (I am assuming because its a turbo?)
Second: the first minute of a cold start the idle is very rough -is this an emissions thing?
Third: The oil temperature need usually doesn't budge until 10-15 minutes of driving. I was expecting the oil to warm up to operating temperature with in 5 minutes.
Are these all typical?

1. Even my 328 is warm after a few hours.
2. All BMWs have cough idle at cold stars. Mine. My friend's. My friend's brother's. My friend's mother's. My friend's father's.
3. Are you timing this? If so I don't think it is 15 minutes, more like 10.

1. Normal
2. Honestly not sure since I live in Florida and don;t have 'cold' weather. How cold?
3. Normal

Did you look into Audi s4? Just traded 2011 335d for 2013 s4. I loved my diesel and it was quick, but whatever you do, do not pull up next to an s4 and expect it to be a confidence builder in your cars performance. The s4 got 4.5 0-60

Stock for stock, isn't the S4 supposed to compete with the M3?
Either way, a 335i with a piggy back would be fine against a s4

As I've told friends: it'll do 70-to-Jail in nothing flat. :D
All normal. Takes a while to warm up the oil; much more so than it takes to warm up the coolant which is the temperature gauge we're most used to seeing.

S4 and 335is. RS4 and M3, in markets where both are available. Between a normal 335 and S4 is only 30hp and MX5's weight. They both come up in equal straightline speeds and times, the difference is in the twisties. If the S4 doesn't have the optional sport diff it's all 335 otherwise S4 has it. But an S4 with that diff and other options is in between a 335 and an M3 pricewise, and the M3 will shat all over it so a 335 is a better competitor for Audi to compare too.

A 335 with nothing will be fine against an S4. Both cars are slightly undderrated from the factory. The S4 has heavy AWD and power sapping AWD. A RWD 335 will be right with it, or slightly ahead of it.
With a tune, the 335 will abosultely destroy even a tuned S4.
But no an S4 would be decimated by an M3. RS models are made to compete directly with M's, not S's.
I've been seeing lately that S models aren't even really that sporty anymore. More just a letter to designate a different motor over the A model.

S4 is priced 8-10k higher than the 335i and it's marginally faster.
If you chipped a 335i for about 1k you'd save 7-9k and be faster than a stock S4.
I just looked online at a dealer here and they're asking $41,900 for a 2010 S4 with only the Prestige Package (which is basically just a premium package) at almost 30k miles.
You can grab a 335i with EVERY OPTION for about $32-34kish with the same miles.
I got my 2010 335i with Sports Package, Navigation, Premium Package and Comfort Access for $31,500. Including CPO. Had ~34k miles on it.
I like the S4 but it's over priced for what you get in my opinion.
I'd rather have a fully loaded 335i any day and have money to spend later.

Unfortunately you will be spending money you save now on fixing all the engine problems 335 is infamous for.

Most of the engine problems are relegated to the MY07-08, but obviously they're going to exist in all. That being said, Audi is certainly not Honda or Toyota in terms of reliability, and it will most definitely break down. Audi doesn't come out of the equation with its poo smelling like roses either.
Audis do tend to have nicer interiors IMO. BMWs are decent, but you get a definite premium feel with Audi interiors. A good benefit, but not a $9k benefit.
ccraig- a 335d and a 335i are two different animals. 335d is rated around 5.9s 0-60, and 335i has been recorded at 4.9s.

Ignore him, he is like an old man in the bimmer community. Back in 07 the N54 was good to bash on as it was unreliable and BMW's first turbo engine in a production car since the 2002 Turbo.
"Damn kids and their turbos and electric steering and 8 speed automatic gearboxes! Back in my day we didn't need to register the battery when we installed a new one!"
Seriously,
HPFP failures, fuel injectors ticks, and wastegate rattles
BMW has warranted the HPFP and Wastegates past the original warranty. Google bmw n54 hpfp warranty and bmw n54 wastegate warranty for more info. The fuel injector ticks were common on the 07/08 N54s and recognized as a problem but never covered outside of factory and cpo warranty. Past 60k they should have been dealt with.

I seem to remember at least in the 80s the e23 745i as a turbo production car BMW had since then, not to mention the diesel turbos they had in Europe all those years. So they are not new to turbos. Anyway, most of the N54 teething problems were due to DI not turbo, and DI was new to everyone, not just BMW, so many had issues with it.
And be nice to your elders, no need to be rude.

*The N54 is the first mass production gasoline turbocharged BMW motor in a long time, better?
I was joking about that old man bit. My own father lives in the days of carburetors. In 20 years I'll be the old man talking about naturally aspirated fuel injected inline 6s.
Is DI limited to force inducted cars? What makes it so different from fuel injection?

Direct Injection is not limited to FI cars, for example the N53 NA I6 has DI. The main differences are as in the name, injecting fuel directly near the spark plugs, which requires very high precision and high pressure pumps, which is where most the problems came from in the early N54s. Also DI supposedly contributes to carbon buildup issues because the fuel, and thus the detergents in it, do not access the whole combustion chamber anymore. See http://auto.howstuffworks.com/direct-injection-engine1.htm
Very few problems were specific to the turbos, mainly the wastegate rattle issues. The rest are rare enough to be considered statistical anomalies.

A 2013 BMW loaded 335 is about 62,000. I paid 60,000 for fully loaded prestige package with extended warranty, tire and wheel and theft protection. BMW is 62 with 50k warranty and nothing else covered. It was no brainer for me. And yes you can chip a 335 to keep up w s4, but warranty is voided. S4 is plenty quick without chip. I could add a new supercharger pulley and belt to add 100 more horses, but I just wait til I get the s6 to get 420 hp

I just maxed an S4 on the Audi's site to $65k
http://configurator.audiusa.com/acc/aoa-aoa-aoa-eng.view;jsessionid=AgIOVftgcCYHAKTffbaVdhu4P1Tiw2 JQhICB2tGX?msk=1#summary
BMW's site doesn't opperate like Audi's, but an F30 335 M-Sport maxes at $59k with every Package and Option that doesn't interfere with the M-Sport line. Oh yeah, it's RWD as it should be.

To expand on mryakan's exposition, DI puts the fuel into the combustion chamber directly (similar to diesel engines) into the already-compressed intake air, while (traditional) port fuel injection puts it into the intake manifold, where it mixes with the air and the intake charge is later compressed and burned in the combustion chamber.
It's useful in FI engines, as it eliminates the possibility of pre-detonation (knock), and allows higher compression ratios (better efficiency).

Um, keep up with an S4 tuned? Are you kidding? A stock 335 will do just fine against an S4, a tuned 335 will absolutely massacre it.
My warranty is just fine, and my tune is 9000 miles in.
And with that S6 you have a portly beast that has vague steering and just loves to understeer. I can add an intake to my stock car and be at 420hp. Still have the steering and control BMW is known for. :D

Have any of you even driven an Audi. I had a 335 for a year. I have compared the two. Hell, I put 22k miles in the 335 in one year, and there wasn't a day I didn't drive it 100 mph or more. I loved my BMW still do, but this S4 is a totally different beast. Trust me I was at BMW with my car salesman looking at a 535 and on a used one there wanted 46k. It didn't even have navigation. And a loaded 2013 335 was 62. I got my s4 for 52, one I got extra 50k warranty and tire package and some left over due to the crappy trade in value 335 had I payed 60. Try driving an Audi before putting your two cents in. Like saying you like brunettes when all you have had is blondes. Wouldn't you like to see if you really know what you were talking about?

Audi released pictures of the new RS4 Avant. Shouldn't you on the Audi forums worshipping it? I kid, I kid.
Why did you bring up the price of a used 535? I thought we were comparing new cars.
Pics of the 62k F30 335 or it didn't happen.
Also, you are comparing the price of a medium optioned car to a fully optioned car. Apples to apples, go to Toys R Us bro then come back here with the results.
Telling lies on the internet is rather silly when one can open another tab on Google Chrome and search. I already went to Audi's site and maxed an S4 at $65k and a maxed an F30 335 M-Sport at $59k with all packages and options that did not interfere with the M-Sport line.

Yes I've owned 2 Audi's. My father has owned too many to remember, his current being an S8. A buddy had an RS4. Still like BMW feel better.

Like I said, I loved my BMW. Comparing the used 535 was just an example of how BMW was a little high on themselves for a used car, but would give me chump change for trade in. In all honesty I would live to have my 335 and s4, but not reasonable and got a good deal on s4

Well no reason to have both. I contemplated an S4 many, many times in the past few years. I was seriously considering an RS4 also... I just don't like the added weight, complexity and dynamics of any AWD system. I don't like the engine hangs way too far out in front of the axle and creates too much understeer and vagueness.
But I almost guarantee at some point I'll own another Audi. I'd actually rather love a TTRS. :)

Ironically I saw 335is today and he followed me like a puppy following his mommy, and when we had they chance to sprint we were both neck and neck, so in all aspects, I pretty much upgraded if my s4 is equal to is, just got s4 for about 15 k cheaper

I too just got a 335i coupe. It's just been a few weeks, but no problems and this engine is smooth as butter.
Enjoy!
Normal on mine too.
