Driving to pick up fiancé and thought I heard some high whining noise. Turned radio off Disney hear it. Drove on and got to her school and put it in park, the fan went nuts. Super loud and the oil temp light came on (assuming oil temp). Shut the car off.
Had to move so I started back up and pulled into a spot, as I sat in park the fan would fluctuate from real high then like shut off, go nuts then shut off. Louder than I've ever heard it.
2006 325i with 117k miles.
Thoughts? I assume with the fan going bat shiz crazy she's not safe to drive.

have you ever changed the water pump or had it replaced before? Sounds like the infamous water pump failure to me. Especially after 117k miles...

I have not.
I am thinking water pump or thermostat. I don't know the symptoms of each.

water pump
So you're on board for the water pump vs thermostat?
Guess I need to start shopping around for a new water pump :(
Well found the water pump for $342 and the thermostat for $77 (Both OEM BMW)... think while I'm in there I might as well just replace both since neither has been done before and I'm at 117k. Saves me the hassle down the road in short-term of having to do it again.

It's the water pump for sure. Replace the thermostat if you want some peace of mind.

Yeah thermostat is only going to run me $77... figured since I was going to be down there anyways, might as well.
Thanks for the input though... nice to hear more folks agreeing with what I've been told so far.
$342 for the OEM BMW water pump didn't seem to horrible... I've heard some getting charged $800+
